The University of Iowa is seeking a Newborn Screening Short Term Follow Up Nurse in the Stead Family Department of Pediatrics. This full-time role involves case management, educational outreach, and collaboration with healthcare providers to ensure effective newborn screening processes. Ideal candidates will possess a nursing degree and relevant experience in clinical care or health education, with a strong emphasis on communication and organizational skills.
With the Stead Family Department of Pediatrics – Division of Medical Genetics, perform case managementand short-termfollowupdutiesfortheIowaNewbornScreeningProgram(INSP)and affiliated state newborn screening programs.Duties include clinical, educational, administrative, liaison and research activities as well as data entry and tracking.
Position Responsibilities:
· Perform case management activities for Iowa or other state newborn screening programs which include:telephone, fax or email notification to primary care providers, birthing facilities, health care workers or parents for abnormal newborn screening results; communicate recommendations in accord with established protocols; assist primary care providers, facilities, and parents/guardians in obtaining a repeat screen and/or confirmatorytesting;informmedicalconsultantsoftheresultsoftheconfirmatorytesting to assess next steps; assist with the referral process to specialists, when necessary; work with the program’s medical consultants to ascertain an outcome for cases.
· Document information and outcomes in multiple databases.Perform data entry into databases (national or disorder specific). Gather, collate and review data, as assigned. Workwithprogramstafftointerpretdataandmakedecisionsinaccordwithestablished protocols.
· Attend and participate in meetings, as assigned. These meetings could include staff meetings, case closure meetings, disorder specific meetings, state newborn screening advisory committee meetings, etc.Meetings could also include attendance at state, regional,nationalmeetingsormeetingsrelatedtograntsobtainedbytheprogram.Travel would be required.
· Participateinthedevelopmentandreviewofprotocolsandother documents.
· Assistwiththedevelopmentandimplementationofeducationalprogramsfornewborn screening stakeholders.
· Provideeducationonnewbornscreeningtostakeholders.Theeducationcouldbeprovided via a webinar presentation or could require travel to provide face-to-face education when necessary (within Iowa or in the states that the Iowa Newborn Screening Programcontracts with).
· Participateinqualityimprovementprojects,as assigned.
· AssistProgramCoordinatorwithdevelopmentandimplementationofscreeningfornew disorders added to the newborn screening program, as assigned.
· Assistwithand/orprepareandpresentnewbornscreeningrelatedclinicalandresearch projects such as abstracts, posters, journal articles, or presentations.
· Maintainskillsandcompetenciesrelatedtocasemanagementandshort-termfollowup duties.
· Communicate expectations and provide support and resources that are in alignment with thevisionand strategicplanningoftheUniversitytofostercreativityandinnovationinthe workplace.
· AssistProgramCoordinatorwithadministrativetasksincludingusingMSWord,Excel, etc.
· Maintainpatient rightsand confidentialityand serveasapatient advocate.
· PerformotherdutiesasassignedbyProgramCoordinatororMedicalDirector(special projects or assignments).

About the Division of Medical Genetics and Genomics
The Division of Medical Genetics and Genomics is committed to excellence in providing comprehensive services for children, adults and prenatal patients in the diagnosis, treatment, and management of genetic conditions. The Division's multidisciplinary team is comprised of board-certified medical geneticists, a molecular genetic pathologist, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, genetic counselors, nurses, and dietitians. Our clinics include: General Genetics Clinics, Metabolic Genetics Clinics, Connective Tissue Disorder Clinics, Neurofibromatosis Clinics and Outreach Genetics Clinics. Genetic diseases and disorders affect families as well as individuals. The medical team provides the information, support and follow-up needed to make informed decisions. Our medical genetics team collaborates with state and federal agencies, educators, researchers, support groups and others to provide the latest information and treatment options for Iowans and their families.
Education Requirements:
Bachelor’sdegreeinnursing, public health or related health field or combination of education or experience
LicensureasaRegisteredNurse
·Ad vanced Genetics Nursing Certification AGN-BC or equivalent
Requirements Qualifications:
· Minimumofoneyearofrelatedexperienceprovidingclinicalcareoreducationaloutreach as part of a health-related program
· Excellentoralandwrittencommunicationskills,includingrelayingcomplicatedmedical information in a clear, concise and definitive manner to health care professionals
· Abilitytotraveltosamedayand/orto multipleday meetings
· Previousexperienceandabilityto workinafast-pacedandtime-critical environment
· Previousexperienceandabilityto workindependentlyaswell aswithina team
· Demonstratedcriticalthinkingand assessment skills
· Demonstratedhigh attentiontodetail includingstrongorganizational skills.
· ProficiencywithMicrosoftOffice(i.e.WordandExcel),computerapplicationsand databases
Highly Desired Qualifications:
· Experienceinprovidingpatientorhealthrelatededucationwithemphasison knowledgeof adult learning theory to small and large groups of people
· Demonstratedprojectmanagementskills;includingdeveloping,planningand implementing initiatives
· Demonstratedexperiencewithqualityimprovementprojectsand/or management
· Master’sinPublic Health
· ValidDriver’s License and ability to meet UI Fleet Safety Standards
