Job summary

Amazon is seeking an Automation Controls Engineer for the NTI team. You will be the controls SME for emerging automation and robotics, shaping standards for a global network and mentoring peers. Expect NA travel and collaboration with engineering, vendors, and operations across sites.

Based in North America with occasional travel, you will ensure robust, scalable control solutions while aligning with network standards and maintenance playbooks.

Qualifications

  • Degree in Electrical, Computer, or Systems Engineering or related field.
  • 3+ years experience with PLC programming (Allen-Bradley, Siemens, or similar).
  • 3+ years automation controls engineering in manufacturing/logistics/industrial settings.
  • Experience designing and implementing control systems for complex automated equipment.
  • Experience managing programs across cross-functional teams and coordinating with engineering and operations.

Responsibilities

  • Lead controls system design reviews for new automation technologies, identifying gaps against network standards and resolving them pre-deployment.
  • Define and maintain control system standards, programming guidelines, and integration requirements.
  • Evaluate PLC, HMI, and SCADA implementations against standards and safety requirements.
  • Partner with engineering teams, vendors, and stakeholders to represent RME control system requirements during design, pilot, and rollout phases.
  • Review electrical schematics, control panel designs, and network architectures, and update requirements where gaps are systemic.
  • Investigate control system failures to identify root causes and drive solutions with development teams.
  • Monitor control system performance metrics and drive improvements back into standards and readiness criteria.
  • Identify and simplify overly complex control architectures through updated standards.

You will engage with engineering teams, vendors, and operations partners to represent RME requirements, provide input into revised designs, and evolve standards to keep pace with new technology types. You will balance operational needs with technical constraints, striving to develop robust control solutions while maintaining a strong focus on standards, scalability, and supportability. As the team scales, you’ll have the opportunity to shape controls standards that become the baseline for our global network and mentor future team members. Key job responsibilities
What You’ll Do
  • Lead controls system design reviews for new automation and robotics technologies, identifying gaps against network standards and working with development teams to resolve them before deployment.
  • Define and maintain control system standards, programming guidelines, and integration requirements — updating them as new technology types reveal gaps.
  • Evaluate PLC, HMI, and SCADA implementations against network standards and safety requirements, providing RME input and recommending where standards need to evolve.
  • Partner with engineering teams, vendors, and stakeholders to represent RME control system requirements during design, pilot, and full-scale rollout phases.
  • Review electrical schematics, control panel designs, and network architectures, providing feedback and updating business requirements where gaps are systemic.
  • Investigate control system failures to identify root causes, drive solutions with development teams, and update standards to prevent re‑occurrence across the network.
  • Monitor control system performance metrics, identify recurring issues, and drive improvements back into standards and readiness criteria.
  • Identify where control system architectures are overly complex or inconsistent, and drive simplification through updated standards and common requirements.

About The Team

NTI (New Technology Integration) sits within Central RME, responsible for embedding maintainability, reliability, and total cost of ownership into new technologies before they reach the field. We ensure next-generation systems meet RME requirements from concept through deployment. Our vision is to transform RME into a proactive engineering partner — influencing design decisions early so that when technology lands at a site, it comes with a clear maintenance playbook, trained technicians, spare parts, and a known cost profile. We're a growing, globally distributed team supporting 113+ technology programs across robotics, sortation, and material handling, interfacing with Amazon Robotics, Applied Sciences, FTR, OneMHS, and GES.

Basic Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree or above in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Systems Engineering, or related fields
  • 3+ years of experience with PLC programming (Allen-Bradley, Siemens, or similar platforms)
  • 3+ years of automation controls engineering experience in manufacturing, logistics, automation, or industrial environments
  • Experience designing and implementing control systems for complex automated equipment
  • Experience managing programs across cross‑functional teams and coordinating with engineering and operations
Preferred Qualifications
  • 5+ years of working directly with engineering teams on technology development or integration projects.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license or relevant controls certifications (Rockwell, Siemens, etc.).
  • Experience in some or all of the following areas: Automated conveyor systems or controls, robotics control systems, industrial networking (EtherNet/IP, PROFINET, Modbus), HMI/SCADA development, motion control systems, servo drives and VFDs, electrical and electronic principles, blueprint and electrical schematic reading, control panel design, industrial electrical, industrial controls, industrial electronics, industrial PC literacy, N.E.C.
  • Experience introducing new and experimental robotic assets to operational environments.
  • Technical understanding of: robotics system components/controls, HMI components, control network components, motion control, fieldbus protocols, safety‑rated control systems, and standard electrical components.
  • Understanding of: 480V 3-phase, 110 VAC, and 24VDC systems and associated control requirements.

The base salary range for this position is listed below. Your Amazon package will include sign‑on payments and restricted stock units (RSUs). Final compensation will be determined based on factors including experience, qualifications, and location.
