At Academy Sports + Outdoors, our Purpose is to make it easier for everyone to enjoy more sports and outdoors. The Sales Manager position is responsible for the overall management and execution of operational excellence for the entire store, with a specific focus on supervising and managing team members in Hardlines and Softlines Sales, which include Camping, Fishing & Hunting, Outdoor, Firearms, Apparel, Footwear, and Team Sports. It directs and coordinates activities through subordinate team leads and other team members. This leadership role is expected to effectively drive the overall performance of the store through supervision, communication, and coordination of team members. By doing so, the Sales Manager leads the team and drives the goals that impact customer satisfaction, store profitability, and Academy's Purpose.

Job Description:

Education: Bachelor's degree in a related field preferred.

Work Experiences:

  • At least three years of relevant work experience required.
  • Demonstrated success in leading departments of up to 40 people to drive operational excellence and sales targets.

Skills:

  • Exceptional supervisory and management skills; ability to coach department members on store policies, protocols, and expectations; leads by example and drives team performance.
  • Excellent customer service orientation.
  • Effective problem solving and communication skills with customers and team members.
  • Strong business acumen, understanding of business implications of decisions, market knowledge, competition awareness, and focus on profitability and targets.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret business periodicals, journals, technical procedures, or regulations.
  • Clear, positive, and persuasive speaking skills; active listening in various situations.
  • Proficient in writing reports, business correspondence, and manuals.
  • Ability to present information effectively and respond to questions from groups.
  • Sound judgment and timely decision-making skills.
  • Working knowledge of inventory software, order processing, payroll systems, and Microsoft Office tools.
  • Basic mathematical skills and ability to follow instructions in various formats.
Key Responsibilities:
  • This is a full-time position, averaging 45-50 hours/week.
  • Manage overall store operations and execution of excellence.
  • Manage Hardlines and Softlines Sales teams, participate in personnel decisions including hiring, training, discipline, and development.
  • Provide direction to teams, ensuring exceptional customer service.
  • Develop and implement strategies to meet operational goals, including sales, staffing, training, and scheduling.
  • Manage workforce productivity and process improvement initiatives.
  • Ensure compliance with sales, safety, and security practices and regulations.
  • Supervise departmental zoning and adherence to standards.
  • Supervise delegated assignments from the Store Director.
  • Participate in floor walks and implement improvements based on feedback.
  • Audit firearm sales for compliance with laws, including completing ATF Form 4473 and background checks; sign off as final approver.
  • Complete Firearms Sales Certification training.
  • Complete Academy Leadership University.
  • Oversee the talent lifecycle, including hiring, onboarding, and coaching.
  • Learn and enforce company policies, procedures, and safety rules.
  • Adhere to work hours, policies, and procedures.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Physical Requirements & Attendance:
  • Ability to talk, hear, stand, walk, sit, and use hands frequently.
  • Occasional climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, crawling.
  • Occasionally lift/move up to 25 pounds; frequently up to 10 pounds.
  • Vision abilities include close, distance, peripheral, depth perception, and focus adjustment.
