As you care for and help patients achieve goals and regain independence, you can form meaningful relationships and celebrate their successes.

As a Student Nursing Aide at our facility, you may perform a variety of duties. While most nurses provide direct patient care, specific responsibilities and daily activities may vary based on the needs of the healthcare team, the patient, and their demographics.

Student Nursing Aide Functions

May perform the following duties under the delegation, direction, and supervision of the Licensed Nurse on duty:

  1. Obtaining vital signs, glucometer, and pulse oximetry readings
  2. Assisting residents with feeding
  3. Dressing changes limited to simple bandaging (No wet-dry or sterile dressing changes per NHS)
  4. Maintaining ostomies (e.g., colostomy and urostomy), including measuring and applying wafer boards
  5. Providing restorative care, including ambulation with gait belt, walker, crutches, and wheelchair
  6. Performing active and passive range of motion (ROM) exercises and contracture care
  7. Peripheral venous phlebotomy for laboratory analysis
  8. Applying oxygen via nasal cannula
  9. Initiating and discontinuing nebulizer treatments, excluding racemic epinephrine administration and residents with suspected or confirmed COVID-19
  10. Administering routine screening tests and immunizations (e.g., flu, TB)
  11. Documenting procedures and medications in electronic medical records and paper records as delegated
  12. Administering routine medications with certain limitations
  13. Participating in the facility’s quality assurance program for the nursing service department
Qualifications
  1. Must be a Nursing Student enrolled in an approved nursing education program, with demonstrated competencies in pharmacology, medication administration, and fundamentals
  2. Must have documentation from the school confirming coursework in nursing fundamentals, pharmacology, and medication administration
  3. Must demonstrate competency within the scope and guidelines of the Board of Nursing for Nursing Student Aide
  4. Minimum age of 18 years
  5. Ability to speak, read, write, and understand English
  6. Patience, tact, enthusiasm, and a positive attitude toward the elderly and disabled
