ACC is seeking a New Hope Coordinator to support the New Hope Placement Program by cultivating relationships with partner organizations, managing placement documents, and coordinating animal transport and placement activities.

The role requires lifting up to 50 lbs, strong computer skills, attention to detail, and humane animal handling. Experience with animal rescues or shelters is preferred, with bachelor’s degree preferred.

New Hope Coordinator

Schedule: Tuesday-Saturdays from 8am-4:30pm and 9:30am-6pm. OFF on Sunday and Monday.

Who We Are

ACC is one of the nation’s largest open-admission animal shelters, whose mission is to End Animal Homelessness in NYC. We touch the lives of nearly 20,000 animals each year. ACC is more than an animal shelter; we are a resource to the community, always seeking ways to keep the human-animal bond intact. With a 90% placement rate, our progressive, life‑saving initiatives contribute to the successful placement of our animals.

We strive to find loving homes for homeless and abandoned cats, dogs, guinea pigs and rabbits, both by adopting animals directly to the public and by partnering with more than 200 dedicated animal placement organizations (our New Hope partners). We also help keep NYC communities safe and rescue animals in need, responding to emergencies that involve animals as well as keeping our doors open 24/7 for people and animals in need.

Summary

Our New Hope Placement Program is our proactive community initiative aimed at finding placement for some of our most vulnerable populations. To accomplish this, ACC establishes and cultivates mutually beneficial and productive relationships with a variety of animal welfare organizations that assist and partner with ACC in placing animals, many of whom may require specialized medical care or behavior training.

The New Hope Team primarily focuses on animals that are less likely to be adopted from the shelter, often due to temperament or severe medical condition, or are unavailable for direct adoption. While cats, dogs and rabbits are our primary focus, the New Hope coordinators are responsible for securing placement for a magnitude of other species including local wildlife, exotic illegal pets, and farm animals. The New Hope coordinators work together seamlessly as a team and will need to handle multiple emergency placements throughout the course of the day.

Required Qualifications:

• High School Diploma or GED required.
• Strong computer literacy required.
• Have a high attention to detail and a strong work ethic.
• Treats animals and people with respect and employ humane handling techniques whenever possible.
• Has at least one-year experience working, or volunteering, with an animal rescue group or shelter as well as experience handling animals of varying temperaments and species.
• Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 lbs.

Essential Job Functions:

• Cultivate and continue relationships with New Hope Partners and their fosters/volunteers through email, phone and in person communications.
• Manage a multi‑line phone system, high volume email account, while also overseeing the integrity of all placement documents including but not limited to health certificates and New Hope Contracts.
• Walk, socialize and interact with animals of varying species and temperaments in order to proactively market them for placement and handle them prior to transport.

Other Responsibilities:

• Provide rounds coverage as needed and represent the placement department as a whole.
• Prioritize animals for placement including conducting and responding to rounds of the care centers.
• Ensure placement inquiries are followed up on in a timely manner and documented correctly.
• Collaborating with the other departments at ACC to execute pathway planning, minimize length of stay, and make the soundest placement decisions.
• Maintain and monitor follow‑up documents, spreadsheets, and other data pertaining to the New Hope department.
• Review, understand, and document all pertinent information in the shelter’s database.
• Coordinate kitten placement activities including overseeing placement with a partner nursery program. This includes communication with all ACC locations on kitten intakes, scheduling transport for placed kittens, and maintaining and updating records in an accurate and timely manner.
• Cultivate and expand relationships with rescues outside of nursery partners to increase placement radius.
• Record and keep track of all underage kitten data.
• Assist supervisors in processing new partner applications.
• Assist supervisors in processing regular audits of placed animals to ensure integrity of program.
• Assist supervisor in collecting and organizing follow up information on animals placed with New Hope Partners.
• Ensure accuracy and timely update of New Hope records.
• Communicate with Best Friend’s, Animal Rescue Team and Placement Transport Team to set up transport for animals to leave ACC.
• Document, review, and relay all information to New Hope Partners as deemed necessary and appropriate.
• Work seamlessly with ACC’s other departments in order to prepare animal’s for transport.
• Work with a variety of different personalities, managing expectations and relationships.
• Fear Free certification required within 30 days of hire.
• Complete other duties as assigned by supervisor.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree preferred.
• Minimum of two year’s work experience in a client facing position strongly preferred.
• Prior experience with Microsoft Office Suite preferred.
• Prior experience with animals (cats/dogs/rabbits), either paid or volunteer, is strongly preferred but not required.
• Thrives on working in a fast paced, often high‑stress, ever changing environment.
• The right candidate doesn’t get flustered easily and welcomes every challenge as a new opportunity to grow and learn.
• Works well independently but also function seamlessly as a member of a team.
• Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 lbs.

Work Environment

At ACC it’s all hands‑on‑deck. We work together as a team, which means you may be asked to help with tasks that involve working outside in all sorts of weather. As a busy animal shelter in one of the biggest cities in the world it can get noisy inside. Employees should have the ability to remain calm yet professional in stressful situations involving animals and/or members of the public. ACC houses hundreds of animals in its facilities at any given time and with that comes fur, odors and other airborne particles in abundance.

ACC offers many low-cost services to pets and people in need. This includes compassionate end‑of‑life services for people who cannot afford to go to a private veterinary office but still want to provide a professional and peaceful transition for their beloved pet.
