Job summary

Animal Care & Control Of NYC is seeking a Placement Transporter to safely move animals between ACC facilities and New Hope partners across New York State. A valid driver’s license and ability to drive a large van are required.

When not transporting, you will assist with shelter adoption efforts, field placement activities, and loading/unloading animals, ensuring humane handling and adherence to safety protocols.

Responsibilities

• Safely transport animals between ACC locations and New Hope partners.
• Support adoption efforts in shelter and at mobile events as needed.
• Assist field placement staff and load/unload animals upon arrival and departure.
• Complete daily transports and ensure paperwork and medications accompany animals.
• Communicate issues to ACC staff during trips and maintain organized route sheets.
• Adhere to safety, humane handling, and fear-free transport practices.

The working schedule for this position is Sunday-Wednesday 9AM- 7PM with Thursday, Friday, and Saturdays off.

ACC is one of the nation’s largest open-admission animal shelters, whose mission is to End Animal Homelessness in NYC. We touch the lives of nearly 30,000 animals each year. ACC is more than an animal shelter; we are a resource to the community, always seeking ways to keep the human-animal bond intact. With a 90% placement rate, our progressive, life‑saving initiatives contribute to the successful placement of our animals.

We strive to find loving homes for homeless and abandoned cats, dogs, guinea pigs and rabbits, both by adopting animals directly to the public and by partnering with more than 200 dedicated animal placement organizations (our New Hope partners). We also help keep NYC communities safe and rescue animals in need, responding to emergencies that involve animals as well as keeping our doors open 24/7 for people and animals in need.

Summary

The Placement Transporter is primarily responsible for the safe and timely transportation of animals from ACC to our New Hope partners throughout New York State and the surrounding areas. This position requires a valid driver’s license in good standing and the ability to drive a large van. When not conducting transports, the Placement Transporter will help support other placement functions including but not limited to supporting adoption efforts in shelter and at weekend mobile events as needed, assisting New Hope staff with field placement efforts, and helping to load and unload animals as they arrive and depart from ACC.

• Ensure that animals are provided with a comfortable, safe transport between locations, in a clean, secure vehicle and always adhering to best practices for companion animal transports.
• Box up and Load/unload animals while using fear free techniques.
• Complete daily transports for all animals placed within ACC’s transport range. Including but not limited to, communicating with the receiver, ensuring that all paperwork and medication arrives with the animals, and communicating any issues that may arise on the trip back to ACC.

Other Responsibilities

• Map out the most optimal routes for each daily trip to maximize efficiency.
• Complete emergency local transports on an as need and as available basis.
• Oversee routine maintenance of the transport van which may include bringing the van to and from scheduled appointments. As well as cleaning out the van’s kennels at the competition of your shift.
• Attend mobile events on the weekend and drive the Mobile Adoptions Center.
• Support overall placement efforts in shelter adoptions and assisting the New Hope department as needed.
• Act as an ambassador for the organization in the community.
• Respond to email and phone calls communicating effectively with the New Hope staff, Field staff, as well as various supervisors throughout the day.
• Be able to keep an organized route sheet throughout the day.
• Complete other duties as assigned by supervisor.
• Fear Free certification required within 30 days of hire.

Preferred Qualifications

• Previous professional driving experience is preferred along with animal handling experience.
• The ability to excel in a fast‑paced, often high stress environment.
• Efficient and punctual with a strong attention to detail.
• Previous experience with animal handling is preferred as this position will be handling animals of a variety of temperaments, sizes, and species.
• Working knowledge of the NYS highway system and main transportation routes in and out of NYC.

ACC’s mission is to end animal homelessness in NYC. At ACC it's all hands‑on deck. We work together as a team, which means you may be asked to help with tasks that involve working outside in all sorts of weather. As a busy animal shelter in one of the biggest cities in the world it can get noisy inside. Employees should have the ability to remain calm yet professional in stressful situations involving animals and/or members of the public. ACC houses hundreds of animals in its facilities at any given time and with that comes fur, odors and other airborne particles in abundance.

ACC offers many low‑cost services to pets and people in need. This includes compassionate end‑of‑life services for people who cannot afford to go to a private veterinary office but still want to provide a professional and peaceful transition for their beloved pet.

Overtime: This is a non- union position and is eligible for overtime.
