Job summary

Lutheran Services Carolinas is seeking an Education Coordinator in Asheville, NC for an in-person, full-time role. You will support recently arrived refugee and immigrant children and their families through school-based programs, coordinating tutoring, mentoring, and parent engagement activities.

The position focuses on improving academic performance and social adjustment, serving as a liaison with schools, and promoting active family involvement in education.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's Degree is required.
  • Experience with refugee/immigrant families preferred.
  • Experience with children, adolescents, families, schools, or educational programs preferred.
  • Experience coordinating educational, youth development, or community programs a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Engage eligible children in after-school programs designed to improve academic success and social adjustment.
  • Coordinate tutoring, mentoring, educational enrichment, and extracurricular activities.
  • Support vulnerable youth populations, including adolescents and LGBTQ+ youth.
  • Facilitate workshops on bullying prevention, substance abuse awareness, social development, and life skills.
  • Promote student participation in educational, recreational, and community activities.
  • Assist families with school enrollment and orientation processes.
  • Serve as a liaison between students, families, and school personnel.
  • Consult with teachers, counselors, and school administrators regarding student progress and adjustment.
  • Advocate for students and address concerns impacting educational success.
  • Help families understand school expectations, resources, and opportunities.

Position Summary

The Education Coordinator works with newly arrived refugee and immigrant children and their families through the School Impact Program and Youth Mentoring Program. This position helps students improve academic performance, social adjustment, and school engagement while supporting parents in becoming active participants in their children's education. The Education Coordinator serves as a liaison between students, families, and schools, coordinating educational activities, tutoring, mentoring programs, parent engagement initiatives, and community-based learning opportunities.

Essential Responsibilities
Student Support & Youth Programming
  • Engage eligible children in after-school programs designed to improve academic success and social adjustment.
  • Coordinate tutoring, mentoring, educational enrichment, and extracurricular activities.
  • Support vulnerable youth populations, including adolescents and LGBTQ+ youth, through age-appropriate educational and developmental programming.
  • Facilitate workshops and activities covering topics such as bullying prevention, substance abuse awareness, social development, and life skills.
  • Promote student participation in educational, recreational, and community activities.
School & Family Engagement
  • Assist families with school enrollment and orientation processes.
  • Serve as a liaison between students, families, and school personnel.
  • Consult with teachers, counselors, and school administrators regarding student progress and adjustment.
  • Advocate for students and address concerns impacting educational success.
  • Help families understand school expectations, resources, and opportunities.
Parent-Focused Activities
  • Develop and implement activities that encourage parent engagement in their children's education.
  • Conduct home visits and school visits as appropriate.
  • Coordinate parent conferences and educational workshops.
  • Assist families with school paperwork, requirements, and communication with schools.
  • Facilitate educational activities, including ESL opportunities and workshops that strengthen family involvement and school participation.
Program Support
  • Maintain accurate records and documentation related to program activities.
  • Coordinate educational events and special projects.
  • Collaborate with schools, community organizations, volunteers, and service providers.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Refugee Services Coordinator.
Qualifications
Education
  • Bachelor's Degree required.
  • Equivalent years of teaching experience may be considered in lieu of a degree.
Experience
  • Experience working with refugee, immigrant, or newly arrived families preferred.
  • Experience working with children, adolescents, families, schools, or educational programs preferred.
  • Experience coordinating educational, youth development, or community programs is a plus.
Skills & Abilities
  • Passion for working with children, youth, and families.
  • Strong interpersonal and relationship-building skills.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication abilities.
  • Ability to work effectively with diverse cultures and backgrounds.
  • Awareness and sensitivity to cultural, linguistic, and socioeconomic differences.

  • Ability to work independently while collaborating with community partners and school personnel.
  • Flexible, patient, and solution-focused approach to working with children and families.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office and related technology tools.

  • Valid driver's license required.
  • Reliable transportation required.
  • Ability to transport clients in a personal vehicle when necessary.
Working Conditions
  • Primarily in-person work in Asheville, NC.
  • Combination of office, school, home, and community-based settings.
  • Frequent interaction with children, families, school personnel, and community partners.
  • Local travel required for school visits, home visits, meetings, and program activities.
  • Ability to sit, stand, walk, and work at a computer for extended periods.
