Tufts Medical Center in Melrose, MA is seeking an outstanding neurosurgeon to join a growing spine-focused practice at MelroseWakefield Hospital. You will spend 80-90% of time at MelroseWakefield Hospital and participate in an academic level 1 trauma center environment.

You will join a department of nine neurosurgeons, with access to the latest cranial and spinal techniques, robotics, and a strong call schedule designed to support work-life balance.

Qualifications

  • Board certification or eligibility in Neurological Surgery (ABNS).
  • Collaborative team player able to work with diverse stakeholders.
  • Strong emphasis on elective spine and general neurosurgery; fellowship not required.
  • Experience with community-based practice encouraged.
  • Massachusetts medical license or eligible to obtain one.

Responsibilities

Practice Highlights

The neurosurgery program at MelroseWakefield hospital, a part of Tufts Medicine, is a comprehensive program that evaluates and treats patients with cranial, spinal, and peripheral nerve disorders. The administration is very supportive and dedicated to the growth of neurosurgery.The new hire will be charged with continuing growth in an already expanding spine-focused practice at MelroseWakefield Hospital.The candidate will spend 80-90% of their time at MelroseWakefield Hospital, providing inpatient, outpatient, and operative room care to the patients of the local community. Most procedures performed at MelroseWakefield Hospital are elective spinal procedures.The candidate would have the ability to bring cranial and more complex spine cases to Tufts Medical Center.

Currently there are no neurosurgical resident physicians at the MelroseWakefield site although many other residencies, including general surgery, rotate through this hospital. Inpatient, outpatient, and operative assistance is provided by 2 dedicated neurosurgical physician assistants. The inpatient service involves intensive care and floor level patients in addition to emergency room and off-service consultations, including a Level 3 trauma center.This candidate will also participate in the shared call pool at Tufts Medical Center, an academic level 1 trauma center, to both foster intradepartmental relationship building as well as maintain cranial skill sets.

MelroseWakefield has dedicated neurosurgical scrub techs, circulating nurses, C-arms, Jackson Tables, Wilson Frames, Mayfields, and Leica Surgical Microscopes. Spinal Navigation and Robotics are currently being budgeted for.Involvement in academic pursuits such as teaching of medical students/residents, attending academic conferences, and/or research can be supported although are not a requirement of this position.Anticipated first year volume of approximately 125 cases and 250+ once established.

  • Board certification or eligibility inNeurologicalSurgery(ABNS)

  • Strong clinical emphasis on elective spine and general neurosurgery.SpineFellowship is notrequiredbut astrongplus
  • Experienceorstrong desireinsupporting a community-based practice
  • Theabilitytoparticipateinteaching and academic clinical promotion if desired but notrequired
  • Current medical license in the Commonwealth of Massachusettsor the ability to obtainalicensefrom the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Medicine isrequired

The salary range of a fully ramped up surgeon for this position is $781,528 to $989,458 annually. This is expected to likely happen in years 3-5 of employment pending appropriate volume by the surgeon. Actual compensation will be determined during the selection process and is based on a variety of factors, including, but not limited to, relevant experience, education, internal equity, and academic rank.
