Job description

NYU Langone Hospital-Suffolk is a 306-bed medical center located in eastern Long Island.

Position Summary

We have an exciting opportunity to join our team as a Neurology Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner (FT Days). In this role, the successful candidate will a nurse practitioner (NP) who will provide high‑quality, cost‑effective health care to all patients at NYU Langone Hospital‑Suffolk.

NPs work as licensed independent practitioners collaborating with licensed physicians to deliver a broad range of medical services. They are responsible for patient assessment, management, documentation, surgical assistance, and participation in interdisciplinary teams. NPs may also serve on the Trauma Team, providing first assistance in surgery and managing emergencies requiring BLS/ACLS/PALS.

Job Responsibilities
  • Introduces/identifies self as a nurse practitioner or physician assistant.
  • Assists physicians with patient management focusing on quality care and timely discharge.
  • Communicates professionally with physicians, consulting physicians, case managers, nurses, and other hospital staff regarding patient information that may affect discharge or care.
  • Performs initial and ongoing assessment/history and physical examination.
  • Assesses and reassesses patient condition and care plan.
  • Orders and interprets tests and results (lab, radiology, EKG, etc.) based on patient need.
  • Orders medications and treatments.
  • Documents care in the chart according to hospital policies and procedures.
  • Formulates diagnoses and implements patient care and treatment plans.
  • Obtains consents for blood/blood product transfusion, CT scan and MRI contrast administration, and procedures performed by the PA.
  • Initiates consults with physicians and other hospital staff, including hospice and palliative care.
  • Initiates and participates in care related to end‑of‑life issues (DNR/DNI and MOLST documentation).
  • Manages medical/surgical patient care, including emergencies requiring BLS/ACLS/PALS (adult or family NP).
  • Performs trauma assessments/reassessments following ATLS (Trauma Team).
  • Performs peri‑ and intra‑operative assessments/reassessments.
  • Performs peri‑ and intraprocedure assessments/reassessments.
  • Rounds with physicians and other hospital staff.
  • Orders, applies, reapplies, and removes restraints.
  • Writes legibly; dates, times, and signs all chart entries.
  • Uses name stamp.
  • Documents patient/family education, results of tests ordered, and disposition of care.
  • Completes all procedure notes and completes discharge documentation including summaries, instructions, discharge orders, prescriptions, and other required documentation.
  • Signs, dates, and times verbal/telephone orders by the end of each shift.
  • Fully completes and submits billing forms by the end of each shift.
Technical Procedures
  • Explains procedures to patient/family.
  • Uses sterile technique and barrier precautions when needed.
  • Performs procedures such as IV insertion, Foley catheter insertion, nasogastric tube insertion, central venous line removal, etc.
  • Sutures and provides wound care, applies splints.
  • Assists in surgery and with cardiac catheterizations.
  • Performs CT/MRI injections and other radiological injections such as nuclear studies.
  • Performs invasive procedures such as PICC insertion, central venous line insertion, chest tube insertion.
  • Performs surgical procedures such as chest tube removal, drain removal, etc.
  • Assists radiologist with procedures such as biopsies, drainage procedures, special procedures.
  • Performs radiological procedures such as paracentesis, thoracentesis, etc.

  • Attends at least 50 % of departmental, Medical Staff, and Trauma Team meetings.
  • Participates in performance assessment and improvement studies.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Graduate of an NP educational program approved by the State of New York.
  • Current NP certification from either the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners or the American Nurses Credentialing Center.
  • Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees.
  • Current New York State license as registered nurse and NP.
  • Basic Life Support Certification through the American Heart Association.
Required Licenses
  • Registered Nurse License – NYS.
  • Nurse Practitioner License – NYS.
  • Basic Life Support Certificate.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced Life Support certification (ACLS, PALS) through the American Heart Association or Neonatal Resuscitation program (NRP) through the American Academy of Pediatrics may be required based on selected privileges.
  • Neurology training and experience preferred.
