NYU Langone Hospital—Suffolk is a 306‑bed medical center located in eastern Long Island, offering comprehensive care across multiple specialties including cardiology, ambulatory surgery, women's imaging, sleep medicine, bariatric surgery, trauma and stroke care. It serves patients with advanced diagnostics and treatment, supported by a modern trauma center and primary stroke center.

Position Summary

Full‑time Neurology Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner – Medical Staff Services. The role is a licensed independent practitioner who collaborates with physicians to provide high‑quality, cost‑effective care, manage patient assessments, order and interpret diagnostic tests, execute procedures, and coordinate discharge planning.

Job Responsibilities
Assessment and Reassessment of Patients
  • Introduce yourself as a nurse practitioner or physician assistant to patients and staff.
  • Assist physicians with patient management focused on quality care and timely discharge.
  • Communicate professionally with physicians, consulting physicians, case managers, nurses, and other hospital staff regarding patient care.
  • Perform initial and ongoing assessment, history and physical examination.
  • Assess and reassess patients’ conditions and care plans.
  • Order and interpret tests and results (labs, radiology, EKG, etc.) according to patient needs.
  • Order medications and treatments.
  • Document care in the chart in accordance with hospital policies and the Clinical Documentation Initiative.
  • Formulate diagnoses and implement patient care plans, discussing expectations and needs with the interdisciplinary team.
  • Obtain consents for procedures, transfusions, imaging contrast, and other interventions.
  • Initiate consults, including hospice and palliative care when appropriate.
  • Participate in end‑of‑life care discussions, including DNR/DNI and MOLST documentation.
  • Manage medical/surgical patient care, including emergencies requiring BLS/ACLS/PALS.
  • Perform trauma assessments and re‑assessments following ATLS protocols.
  • Conduct peri‑ and intra‑operative assessments and re‑assessments.
  • Round with physicians and other staff.
  • Order, apply, and remove restraints per policy.
  • Maintain legible documentation, including dates, times, and signatures on all chart entries.
  • Complete billing forms, discharge documentation, and other required paperwork by shift’s end.
Technical Procedures
  • Explain procedures to patients and families.
  • Utilize sterile technique with barrier precautions.
  • Perform intravenous insertion, Foley catheter insertion, nasogastric tube insertion, and central line removal.
  • Provide wound care and suturing.
  • Apply splints.
  • Assist in surgery and with cardiac catheterizations.
  • Administer catheter or MRI injections and other radiological injections.
  • Perform invasive procedures such as PICC insertion, chest tube insertion, and drain removal.
  • Assist radiologists with biopsies and drainage procedures.
  • Execute radiological procedures including paracentesis and thoracentesis.

  • Answer pages and calls promptly with title and greeting.
  • Attend at least 50% of departmental, medical staff, and trauma team meetings.
  • Participate in performance assessment and improvement studies.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Graduate of an NP educational program approved by the State of New York.
  • Current NP certification from either the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners or the American Nurses Credentialing Center.
  • Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees.
  • Current New York State license as registered nurse (RN) and nurse practitioner (NP).
  • Basic Life Support certification through the American Heart Association.
Required Licenses
  • Registered Nurse License – NYS
  • Nurse Practitioner License – NYS
  • Basic Life Support Certificate
Preferred Qualifications
  • Advanced Life Support certification (ACLS, PALS) or Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) through relevant professional organizations, as required by privileges.
