Job summary

UChicago Medicine is seeking a Neurodiagnostic Technologist II (PRN/Registry) in the Neurophysiology Department. The role performs standard neurodiagnostic procedures in outpatient or portable settings in ER, ICU, radiology or inpatient units, following ASE T/AEEGS standards.

The candidate will maintain and advance clinical and technical knowledge, with opportunities to perform advanced procedures under indirect supervision and contribute to the lab's overall workflow.

Qualifications

• Minimum of 2 years EEG and/or Sleep experience.
• CPR/BLS Certification required.
• LTM 100 course certification required.
• ASET competency skills and knowledge within 90 days of hire.
• Proficient with the International 10-20 System.

Responsibilities

• Explain procedures and document medical history.
• Document patient history in EMR per guidelines.
• Apply electrodes using 10/20 system and 10/10 nomenclature.
• Obtain standard or extended EEG recordings in outpatient or portable settings.
• Identify artifacts and troubleshoot to minimize impact.

The Neurodiagnostic Technologist II is responsible for the performance of all neurodiagnostic procedures in accordance the technical standards set forth by the American Society of Neurodiagnostic Technologists (ASET), the American Electroencephalography Society (AEEGS). The Neurodiagnostic Technologist II is required to maintain and improve his/her level of clinical and technical knowledge, including the performance of advanced procedures under indirect supervision. The Neurodiagnostic Technologist II plays a role in the general flow and operation of the lab.

Essential Job Functions

• Explains procedure, answers pertinent procedure questions, documents medical history and other relevant information
• Documents patient history in electronic medical record according to ACNS and departmental guidelines
• Utilizing paste or collodion and adhesive tape applies electrodes according to the 10/20 System. Adds additional electrodes according to 10/10 Modified Nomenclature System
• Obtains standard or extended recordings in an outpatient area or as a portable study in the ED, ICU, NICU, EMU, radiology or inpatient units
• Recognizes artifacts and takes appropriate steps to eliminate them utilizing intermediate troubleshooting techniques
• Appropriately monitors other variables such as EKG, EMG, EOG, or respirations as technically or clinically indicated
• Uses activation procedures such as hyperventilation, photic stimulation and sleep, when appropriate and demonstrates additional activation procedures when necessary. Additional stimulation to be performed on unresponsive or comatose patients
• Selects electrode combinations and demonstrates skill in creating new montages and equipment settings for electroencephalographic recordings when clinically indicated under indirect supervision
• Determines the correct montages, filter changes, and activation procedures to enhance epileptic form activity or waveform morphology. Performs advanced procedures under indirect supervision
• Ability to correctly identify normal and abnormal EEG patterns
• Summarizes the recording for the purpose of informing the physician of abnormalities observed during the test.
• Keeps equipment clean and in good operating condition
• Familiar with diagnostic trouble shooting techniques, notifying supervisor of problems
• Assists with scalp electrode placement and maintenance of scalp electrodes on intracranial grid patients utilizing 10/10 Modified Nomenclature under direct supervision

Qualifications

• Minimum of 2 years EEG and/or Sleep experience
• Motivated to continue education through an END [Electro neurodiagnostic]/Polysomnography Certification or completion of an ASET on-line EEG 12 module course completion certification within a year
• CPR certified in basic cardiac life support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA) is required
• LTM 100 course certification required
• Must pass ASET competency skills and knowledge within 90 days of hire
• Must be proficient with the International 10-20 System
• Motivated to learn complex neurodiagnostic procedures
• Must possess interpersonal skills to provide safe and effective patient care
