Job summary

WVUH West Virginia University Hospitals in Morgantown seeks an Interventional Radiologic Technologist - Level I to perform diagnostic and interventional procedures with sterile technique, acquire imaging, and provide on-call emergency services.

The role requires ARRT radiography registration, state licenses listed, BLS within 30 days of hire, and ongoing competency validations. This position is on-site with opportunities for professional development and a defined career ladder.

Qualifications

  • Current Radiography license as required by the state where services will be provided.
  • ARRT Registered in Radiography.
  • BLS certification within 30 days of hire.

Responsibilities

  • Monitor and interpret Hemodynamic monitoring.
  • Maintain competencies yearly by participating in Validations in Practice.
  • Participates in Inventory Management of the department.
  • Checks and prepares patient prior to procedure.
  • Maintains radiation safety.
  • Participates in Performance Improvement activities.
  • Instructs radiography students in the clinical setting with regard to patient positioning, technique selection, manipulation of equipment and the use of accessory devices to obtain Radiographic images.

Job description

Provides technical assistance in performing diagnostic and interventional procedures utilizing sterile and aseptic technique. Acquires all imaging and post processing. Provides emergency services on call. Performs the duties and responsibilities within the scope of an Interventional Radiologic Technologist - Level I, as defined within the job description.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
EDUCATION, CERTIFICATION, AND/OR LICENSURE:
  • Must possess current Radiography license as required by state board where services will be provided.
  • Radiographer license through the Maryland Board of Physicians (MD).
  • Radiographer license through the Ohio Board of Radiology (OH).
  • No state license is required (PA).
  • Radiography License through the West Virginia Medical Imaging and Radiation Therapy Technology Board (WV).
  • Registered by the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) in Radiography.
  • Certification in Basic Life Support within 30 days of hire.
  • State criminal background check and Federal (if applicable), as required for regulated areas.
EXPERIENCE:
  • One year experience as a CV interventional radiologic technologist and/or interventional radiologic technologist.
CAREER LADDER LEVEL REQUIREMENT:
One additional certification through American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT):
  • Cardiac Interventional Radiography (CI)
  • Cardiovascular Interventional (CV)
  • Vascular Interventional Radiography (VI)
OR one additional certification through Cardiovascular Credentialing International (CCI):
  • Registered Cardiovascular Invasive Specialist (RCIS)
  • Registered Cardiac Electrophysiology Specialist (RCES)
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Obtain Dysthymia course certification through WVU Medicine within one year of hire.
  • Certification in Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS).
CORE DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Monitors and interprets Hemodynamic monitoring.
  • Maintains all competencies yearly by participating in Validations in Practice.
  • Participates in Inventory Management of the department.
  • Checks and prepares patient prior to procedure.
  • Maintains radiation safety.
  • Participates in Performance Improvement activities.
  • Observes sterile technique while assembling supplies necessary for physicians and other lab personnel involved to scrub and enter the lab without infraction 100% of the time.
  • Maintains the confidentiality of the patient and unit information, without infraction, as monitored by supervision.
  • Prepares entry site applicable to the procedure using sterile technique and three areas of specialization.
  • Continuously monitors patient’s ECG and blood pressure while documenting and advising the physician of any and all activity in an accurate and timely manner and providing documentation that will become part of the patient’s permanent record.
  • Participates in the on-call rotation of the laboratory and remains available for emergent procedures 24 hours a day.
  • Acts as the laboratory’s code team by initiating resuscitative measures and cardiac defibrillators under the direct supervision of the physician in charge.
  • Correctly documents all procedures performed in three areas of specialization as defined by the department and utilizes the inventory control system that is established. Correctly bills for all procedures.
  • Participates in educational and in-service opportunities to maintain three areas of specialization.
  • Instructs radiography students in the clinical setting with regard to patient positioning, technique selection, manipulation of equipment and the use of accessory devices to obtain Radiographic images.
  • Supports the development of level I Technologists.
For facilities with specialty accreditation requirements:
  • Completion of annual required education related to specialty accreditation as defined by accreditation standards. Training may be completed through CBLs, trainings, In-services, and competency validation.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Ability to stand for long periods of time while wearing lead aprons.
  • Ability to lift, push, or pull a minimum of 40 pounds
  • Ability to sit for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to differentiate various shades of gray as depicted on a black and white television monitor or photograph.
WORKING ENVIRONMENT:
  • The work environment is clinical by nature.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is occasionally exposed to: moving mechanical parts; airborne particles, body fluids, toxic or caustic chemicals, risk of electrical shock, risk of radiation. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
  • Maintains Radiation safety.
SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
  • Ability to communicate with physicians and peers on a professional level
  • Knowledgeable in Sterile Technique.
  • Knowledgeable in acquiring, archiving and transmitting images to data storage system.
  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret professional journals, operating manuals, product information or regulations.
  • Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram or schedule form
  • Ability to solve practical problems with limited standardization of variables.

The Interventional Radiology Clinical Ladder is a system-wide clinical advancement program to enhance professional development, provide a reward system for quality clinical performance, promote quality imaging care, and improve job satisfaction for interventional radiologic technologists.

To apply for the next level, the interventional radiology technologist must meet the requirements of their current level. They must also meet the required years of experience, degree, and certification to apply for the next level.

Level 1
  • No experience required.
  • All Interventional Radiologic Technologists with less than 12 months of experience enter at Level one.
Level 2
  • Meets requirements for previous level.
  • One year of experience.
  • Complete competency of Skill Set Tech 1.
  • Complete Workday course.
Level 3
  • Meets requirements for previous levels.
  • One continuing education pathway.
  • Three years of experience.
  • Compliant in 3 leadership/supervisory skills.
  • Complete competency of Skill Set Tech 1 and 2.
Level 4
  • Meets requirements for previous levels.
  • One continuing education pathway.
  • Five years of experience.
  • Compliant in 5 leadership/supervisory skills.
  • Complete competency of Skill Set Tech 1, 2 and 3

Additional Job Description: This position is for Neuro IR. Current shift is 4-10s (7a-530p). Call is required with a 45-minute call back time
