Job summary

Astera Neuro in Alameda, CA seeks engineers to design flexible neural probes, insertion needles, and a precision robotics system enabling large-scale neural recording with micron precision. You will own hardware from concept through validation, collaborating across mechanical, electrical, and software teams.

Roles range from Engineer to Principal Engineer, with scope to shape hardware roadmaps, mentor teams, and push fabrication/testing strategies in a fast, open-science environment.

Qualifications

  • PhD, MS, or BS with 3 to 12+ years of experience.
  • Backgrounds in mechanical, electrical, biomedical, or materials engineering, mechatronics, robotics, applied physics, MEMS/microfabrication, or related fields.
  • Strong hands-on engineering across mechanical design and prototyping; you move between CAD, the machine shop, and the benchtop.
  • Experience building precision electromechanical or robotic systems with multi-axis motion and tight tolerances.
  • Familiarity with microfabrication and thin-film processes or ability to learn quickly.
  • Comfort with real-time control and software (Python + C/C++; embedded/FPGA/RTOS a plus).
  • Knowledge of the signal-acquisition chain and collaboration with electronics engineers.
  • Genuine interest in neuroscience instruments and tissue-mechanics constraints.

Responsibilities

  • Design flexible, high-density neural probes with hundreds to thousands of microelectrodes.
  • Build probe-to-chip integration and low-noise readout front-end for neural signals.
  • Design insertion needles and precision insertion mechanisms for micron-scale placement.
  • Develop insertion strategies to handle bending, buckling, and tissue interaction.
  • Build a multi-axis insertion robot with real-time control for fast, accurate placements.
  • Develop machine-vision guidance to locate targets and avoid vasculature.
  • Create electrode characterization and process pipelines for manufacturable parts.
