Job summary

HRB in Washington, DC seeks an experienced Network Infrastructure Technician responsible for installation, maintenance, documentation, and lifecycle management of physical network and IT infrastructure. You will be a primary technical resource for structured cabling, equipment installation, network closets, and server rooms, coordinating required materials and completing work to operational status.

  • Senior level: establish infrastructure standards, guide junior personnel, and act as main contact for accountability.
  • Hands-on infrastructure work including installation, routing, and equipment handling.

Position Description

Responsible for the installation, maintenance, organization, documentation, and lifecycle management of physical network and IT infrastructure. This position serves as a primary technical resource for structured cabling, equipment installation, network closets, server rooms, infrastructure inventories, and hardware decommissioning. The technician is expected to independently identify infrastructure requirements, resolve routine installation obstacles, coordinate required materials and resources, and see assigned work through to operational completion. At the senior level, the technician will also establish infrastructure standards, provide technical guidance to junior personnel, and serve as a primary point of contact for physical network infrastructure and equipment accountability. The position requires regular hands‑on infrastructure work and may include:

  • Installing or removing equipment from racks and cabinets.
  • Working above or below raised floors and within telecommunications spaces.
  • Routing and installing cabling in cable trays, ladder racks, and approved pathways.
  • Using ladders and standard installation tools.
  • Lifting and positioning servers, switches, UPS components, and other IT equipment in accordance with organizational safety requirements.
  • Standing, kneeling, bending, reaching, and working in confined equipment areas for extended periods.
Skills Required
  • Strong knowledge of structured copper and fiber‑optic cabling.
  • Experience terminating and testing Ethernet cabling.
  • Familiarity with fiber‑optic connectors, transceivers, patch panels, and associated infrastructure.
  • Knowledge of network rack and cabinet installation and organization.
  • Ability to interpret network diagrams, rack elevations, cable schedules, and equipment documentation.
  • Working knowledge of Ethernet networking, VLANs, switch ports, link negotiation, and physical‑layer troubleshooting.
  • Familiarity with common network equipment including switches, routers, servers, UPS systems, KVMs, and console equipment.
  • Experience using cable testers, toner/probe equipment, optical testing equipment, and common hand tools.
  • Strong equipment inventory and documentation skills.
  • Ability to troubleshoot infrastructure problems systematically and independently.
  • Ability to communicate technical requirements and infrastructure deficiencies clearly.
Desirable skills
  • Experience working in enterprise, government, DoD, or similarly controlled environments.
  • Experience with structured cabling standards and industry best practices.
  • BICSI, CompTIA Network+, Cisco, fiber‑optic, or equivalent industry certifications preferred.
  • Experience with IT asset‑management or property‑accountability systems.
  • Experience with DRMO/DLA Disposition Services or comparable government equipment‑disposition processes.
  • Experience maintaining network closets, server rooms, data centers, or telecommunications spaces.
  • Familiarity with cybersecurity requirements governing equipment sanitization and disposal.
Salary

The projected salary range for this position is $120,000 to $160,000; however, this is not a guarantee of salary. Salary will be set based on experience and contractual requirements.
