Overview

The Department of Veterans Affairs Network Operations Center (NOC) defends, manages, and monitors the network operating status and cybersecurity posture of the VA. It provides day-to-day management, monitoring, operations, and configuration of the Trusted Internet Connection (TIC) Gateways, enterprise security systems and services, threat and vulnerability analysis, validation of security controls, incident management, incident response, and enterprise network management.

Responsibilities

We are seeking a qualified network engineer to support the Network Edge Operations team. You will work with a team of network engineers and administrators dedicated to serving our nation's Veterans. The team operates 24/7/365, maintaining and analyzing large, diversified networks with enterprise-grade equipment from various vendors. Daily tasks include monitoring network status using dedicated tools and assisting with customer-reported connectivity issues.

• Maintain operational and security capabilities of the VA’s network gateways.
• Support the VA NOC by providing Tier II network engineering support.
• Respond to Help Desk escalations via phone, email, or ticketing system.
• Maintain and improve NOC processes and procedures.
• Update and manage technical documentation, diagrams, and databases.
• Participate in technical reviews, recommending solutions and improvements.
• Perform routine maintenance on network devices and services.
• Collaborate with architecture and engineering teams on project implementations.

Mandatory Qualifications

Non-negotiable requirements include:

• Technical experience configuring enterprise-grade networking equipment via CLI or GUI.

Qualifications

Required Skills and Experience

• Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science or related field with 0-2 years of experience, or 5 years of additional experience in lieu of a degree.
• Ability to pass and maintain a Tier 4 (BI) Government Background Investigation.

Preferred Skills and Experience

• Certifications such as CCNA (route/switch) or CCNP, CCNA Security or CCNP Security.
• Knowledge of OSPF, BGP, MPLS, and experience with Cisco VPNs, Firewalls, and network management tools.
• Familiarity with protocols like HTTP/HTTPS, SSL/TLS, DNSSec, SNMP.
• Experience with ticketing systems, network troubleshooting, and packet analysis.
