Job summary
American Electric Power in Columbus, Ohio is seeking a Network Mechanic D to support installation, maintenance, and inspection of URD primary cable and street lighting equipment.
The role requires a high school diploma, a valid driver's license, and a CDL permit within 60 days; experience is not required, though line work is preferred. Candidate must live within 45 minutes of the Grandview Service Center.

Responsibilities
- Assist in installation, maintenance and inspection of underground URD facilities.

- Learn to install URD stress cones, primary cable splices and outdoor terminations.
- Maintain PPE and identify grounding cables and cable types/voltage ratings.
- Attend training and comply with safety and supervision levels.

Assist with the installation, rearrangement, maintenance, operation, removal and inspection of underground transmission and distribution facilities. Drive and operate line trucks and associated auxiliary equipment.
Network Mechanic D:
What You'll Do:
- During the first six months in this classification, the employee must demonstrate the ability to operate Company equipment and work in enclosed spaces on de-energized conductors and equipment. After six months in this classification, under direct supervision, may work on conductors and equipment energized at voltages up to 260 volts.
- Work from bucket trucks or on ladders and below ground within enclosed spaces (vaults and manholes),along with proper set up of barricades, operation of atmospheric monitoring test equipment, and ventilation blowers.
- Learn and demonstrate the required skills to personal rescue from both bucket trucks and enclosed spaces.
- Become familiar with the components that make-up URD primary cable.
- Set up and operate cable-stripping tools.
- Learn and install (URD) stress cone, primary cable splice, and outdoor termination.
- Become familiar with the use and care of insulating rubber gloves, sleeves and other personal protective equipment and identify the types of grounding cables utilized for personal protective grounding.
- Become familiar with the identification of primary and secondary cable types, sizes and voltage ratings.
- Develop knowledge of Series and Parallel Circuits, Ohms Law, and Electron Flow.
- Learn and understand hand signals for mobile cranes, derricks, and winch lines.
- Install, maintain and remove street lighting equipment.
- Set and remove barricades, power units, flags, signs and flares; direct pedestrian traffic.
- Maintain tools, equipment and work areas in a clean and orderly condition.
- Attend and participate in training as assigned.
What We're Looking For:
Education:
- High school graduate or GED.
Experience:
- No experience required.
- Line work experience or line school education is preferred.
Licenses/Certifications:
- Must possess and maintain a valid state driver's license.
- Employee shall obtain appropriate licensing as required by federal and/or state law prior to the end of the designated probationary period.
- Must acquire CDL beginners permit within 60 days.
Other Requirements:
- Must be able to distinguish colors on a standard color blindness test.
- Must have the ability to deal with employees, customers and the general public in a courteous and proper manner.

- This role requires regular overtime and on-call response.
- Travel, including out of town travel, may also be required.
