Job summary

Caltech's IPAC is seeking a Network Engineer to design, operate, and optimize a high-performance network infrastructure supporting NASA, NSF, and private observatories. You will join a tight-knit IPAC Support Group coordinating with network, systems, and database engineers to build pipelines connecting the global astronomical community to scientific data.

Qualifications

Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related field with 5+ years of experience.
Extensive experience with Arista, Cisco, or similar networking hardware.
Strong WAN/LAN configuration and routing protocols knowledge (IPv4/IPv6).
Experience with Palo Alto or similar enterprise firewalls.
Experience with Arista CloudVision or similar network management platforms.
US PERSON as defined by ITAR regulations.

Responsibilities

Collaborate on Architecture & Automation: develop and maintain the IPAC network architecture and expand IaC methodologies.
Streamline Data Movement: optimize internal network and software architectures for large data transfers and archive updates.
Optimize Performance: analyze, optimize, and plan capacity for HPC and archive workloads.
Consult & Coordinate: evaluate networking requirements with project engineers and IPAC staff.
Share Infrastructure & Security Duties: co-manage firewalls, monitor tools, and cabling/layout.
Perform other duties as assigned.
