VDOT is seeking an experienced Network Engineer 4 to support operations at its Staunton, VA office. This role requires a seasoned professional with strong problem-solving skills, a high degree of independence, and the ability to multitask in a fast-paced environment. The Network Engineer will support the Transportation Operations Center, providing end-to-end support, network design, implementation, and maintenance.

Key Responsibilities:

• Respond to Tier 1–3 network support requests and incidents.
• Troubleshoot and resolve network connectivity issues and break/fix requests.
• Design, configure, and deploy network infrastructure and hardware.
• Monitor network resources for performance, availability, and security threats.
• Maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation on network architecture and projects.
• Ensure accurate inventory and maintenance of network assets.
• Manage VLANs, routing protocols, access control lists, and remote access technologies.
• Collaborate with ITS Field Maintenance for communications and support.
• Support network security initiatives, including threat hunting and mitigation.
• Implement and maintain cybersecurity best practices and protocols.
• Communicate effectively with technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Required Skills and Experience:

• Extensive experience with Cisco Routing and Switching
• VLAN Management and Network Design expertise
• Proficient in configuring Access Control Lists and subnetting
• Experience with authentication protocols (e.g., RADIUS, TACACS+)
• Strong knowledge of routing protocols such as BGP and OSPF
• Hands-on experience with Cisco FMC/Firepower
• Network Monitoring and performance tuning skills
• Familiarity with Wireless Technologies
• DNS and DHCP configuration and troubleshooting
• Understanding of STP, VTP, Multicast protocols
• VPN and Remote Access Technologies
• Strong background in Network Security

Preferred Qualifications:

• Industry certifications (e.g., CCNA, CCNP, or equivalent)
• Prior experience supporting transportation or government networks
• Experience with cybersecurity threat analysis tools
