OT Network Engineer Manufacturing | On-site | Two openings: Indianapolis, IN and Jackson, TN (West Tennessee)
Our client, an established manufacturer, is hiring an OT Network Engineer to implement, maintain, and support the secure, reliable industrial networking that keeps the plant floor running. Working alongside Automation/Process Engineers, IT, and Information Security, you will configure and troubleshoot OT network infrastructure, keep machines connected and coordinated, and help advance the client's digital-manufacturing initiatives. This is a hands-on, plant-floor role. Roughly 60% implementation and new-project delivery, 40% operations and support.
What you'll do
- Design, configure, deploy, and maintain OT network infrastructure: switches, routers, firewalls, wireless, and VPN across the manufacturing floor.
- Monitor OT network performance and resolve incidents quickly to minimize production impact and sustain high uptime.
- Partner with Automation Engineers to keep ICs, SCADA, and PLC connectivity reliable across the plant floor.
- Collaborate with IT and Information Security to secure OT/IT integration and maintain audit readiness.
- Apply the Purdue model as the foundational framework for OT network segmentation and zone-based security.
- Manage and patch OT networking hardware; maintain VLANs, device backups, and configuration standards.
- Support network upgrades, migrations, and new OT system deployments; coordinate with vendors as needed.
- Maintain accurate documentation of topologies, configurations, and operational procedures.
Required qualifications
- Manufacturing experience. Experience working in a manufacturing environment, hands-on, on the plant floor.
- Purdue model. Real experience in the machine-adjacent layers (Purdue Levels 2–4), from area supervision through the OT/IT crossover, not office IT alone.
- OT switches. Hands-on experience deploying, configuring, and troubleshooting OT switches and industrial Ethernet.
- Degree required. Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Engineering, IT, or a related field.
- Solid network engineering foundation: routing, switching, firewalls, and network security appliances.
- Experience with either Cisco or Fortinet networking and security platforms, with a willingness to learn the other.
- Familiarity with PLCs and the automation equipment common to manufacturing environments.
- Working knowledge of IPS/SCADA industrial protocols (OPC, Modbus, PROFINET, CIP, DNP3).
- Strong OT security fundamentals: segmentation, firewalls, and secure remote access.
- Clear communication and documentation skills across technical and non-technical audiences.
Preferred qualifications
- Hands-on experience aligning OT environments to ISA/IEC 62443 and NIST frameworks.
- Depth with a vendor stack: Cisco Industrial Ethernet, Firepower, Catalyst Center, Cyber Vision; or Fortinet FortiGate, FortiSwitch, FortiNAC.
- Familiarity with OT monitoring/visibility tools (e.g., Cisco Cyber Vision, Stealthwatch, or comparable).
- Certification such as CCNA, CCNP, or Fortinet NSE.
