Nucor, a leading North American steel producer, is hiring a Network Engineer for its Gallatin, KY operation. The role sits in NBT and focuses on configuring, securing, and supporting production-network infrastructure across locations. Travel about 25% to assist other divisions.

The ideal candidate holds a IT/CS degree with relevant LAN/WAN experience, understands TCP/IP, OSPF/BGP, and network security. Onsite work and a strong safety mindset are essential for success in this role.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or related IT/Engineering field; 1 year of LAN/WAN support or 3 years of LAN/WAN support.
• Authorized to work in the US; visa sponsorship not offered.

Responsibilities

• Configure, secure, and maintain NBT’s network infrastructure to ensure efficient, reliable operations.
• Collaborate with local IT groups and enterprise teams to implement network solutions (LAN/WAN, TCP/IP, OSPF/BGP).
• Coordinate infrastructure installations and maintenance at local sites.
• Promote current networking standards and best practices across the enterprise.
• Provide technical support and service to teammates regarding network issues and IT projects.
• Identify improvements to standards, policies, and procedures for reliability and efficiency.
• Troubleshoot network issues promptly to minimize downtime.
• Familiarity with network security practices and access models; experience with switching, routing, firewalls, wireless.
• Leverage AI tools to accelerate analysis, documentation, or requirements gathering.

Basic Job Functions:

Nucor Business Technology (NBT)is seeking a highly skilledNetwork Engineer at our Nucor Steel Gallatin. This position will be part of a shared services team that is responsible for configuring, maintaining, and supporting network infrastructure in production environments across all Nucor locations while maximizing security and operational effectiveness. The role provides the successful candidate an opportunity to become a key team player offering technical expertise in supporting Nucor’s network operations and innovation.

This position will be onsite, located at our Nucor Steel - Gallatin division in KY. This position requires travel [approximately 25%] to support other divisions.

Candidates must be legally authorized to work in the US (Nucor Business Technology (NBT) will not sponsor the need for a visa now or in the future). Due to federal security requirements applicable to this role, only U.S. citizens and lawful permanent residents are eligible for consideration.

Responsibilities include but not limited to:

• Configure, secure, and maintain NBT’s network infrastructure to ensure efficient, reliable, and high- performance operations.
• Collaborateand coordinatewithlocalIT groups and enterprise teammates to implement effective network solutionsto include working withnetworking fundamentals, including:TCP/IP networking, LAN/WAN environments, and common routing protocols such as OSPF and BGP.
• Coordinate infrastructure installations and maintenance, including setting up network equipment and performing hardware configuration and upgrades at local sites.
• Drive consistency in networking standardsby adhering to and promoting current standards and emerging networking best practices across the enterprise.
• Provide technical support and customer serviceto teammates by promptly addressing network-related requests, troubleshooting issues, and assisting with IT projects.
• Identify and implement improvementsto departmental standards, policies, and procedures to enhance network reliability and efficiency.
• Troubleshoot and resolve network issuesin a timely manner, analyzing problems to minimize downtime and ensure the network operates efficiently.
• Familiarity with network security best practicesand access control models, and experience working with network hardware/software (switching/routing, firewalls, wireless, etc.).
• Leverage AI tools(e.g., GitHub Copilot, ChatGPT, Claude) to accelerate analysis, documentation, or requirements gathering.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, Computer Science, or related IT/Engineering field combined with one year of work experience supporting local area network infrastructure OR3 years of experience supporting local area network infrastructure

Preferred Qualifications:

• Professional networking certifications such as CCNA or CCNP
• Experience with scripting languages (e.g.,Perl,Python) for network automation and task optimization
• Experience with networksecuritypractices andaccess controlmodels (e.g.Palo Alto, SDWAN and Firewall, Cisco ISE, SDA)
• Experience leading technical projects
• Experience in managingsingle-modeandmultimode fibercabling, and experience with installation and maintenance
