Qualifications

  • Accredited high school diploma or GED; TxCHSE acceptable; bachelor's degree preferred.
  • Experience: 3-7 years in large networked environments.
  • Knowledge of DNS, IP routing, VPNs, VLANs, and security.
  • Ability to work with cross-functional teams and document work.

Network Engineer Reports to: Manager III - Core Engineering Salary: $80,476-$96,960 Pay Grade: 505 Duty Days: 239 FLSA Status: Exempt PC#: 26448

POSITION PURPOSE Analyzes, designs, installs, configures, maintains, and repairs the network infrastructure and application components. Performs a wide variety of evaluation, maintenance, installation, and training tasks to ensure computer network performance meets District and user satisfaction. Provides direction, information, and recommendations regarding network configurations and installations.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Maintains a thorough understanding of the basics behind the Internet and its workings (such as Domain Name Server (DNS), Security, IP Routing, Hypertext Transfer Protocol (HTTP), Virtual Private Network (VPN), Email Routing, SPAM, and so forth).
  • Configures and sets-up Firewalls, VPN Concentrators, and Security appliances for access to vital business applications.
  • Designs, configures, and implements complex switching and wireless networking that supports open or secured access and the ability to support voice and video applications.
  • Maintains a thorough understanding of Local Area Networking. ? Assists in the design of multi-server environments including IP address schemes, DNS, etherchannel, routing, and so on.
  • Configures and installs client and server network software for upgrading and maintaining network and telecommunication systems.
  • Manages assigned projects and program components to deliver services in accordance with established objectives.
  • Applies security patches and firmware updates (Software/Hardware).
  • Provides technical and architectural guidance for projects leveraging network resources.
  • Maintains and configures software defined network. ? Designs, configures, maintains, and installs point-to-point and point-to-multipoint outdoor wireless solutions.
  • Responds to inquiries from staff, administrators, service providers, site personnel, outside vendors, and others to provide technical assistance and support.
  • Administers systems and servers related network to ensure availability of services to authorized users.
  • Troubleshoots malfunctioning of network hardware and software applications, telephones, and security systems to resolve operational issues and restores services.
  • Documents and responds to issue-request assignments using District ticket system.

SAFETY

  • Performs preventive maintenance on tools and equipment and ensures equipment is in safe operating condition.
  • Follows established safety procedures and techniques to perform job duties including lifting and climbing; operates tools and equipment according to established safety procedures.
  • Corrects unsafe conditions in work area and promptly reports any conditions that are not immediately correctable to supervisor.

  • Knowledge of Layer 2 and 3 networking protocols.
  • Knowledge of Unified Communication Manager configuration and infrastructure.
  • Knowledge of Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) implementation and support.
  • Knowledge of contemporary technologies, such as routers, VPNs, firewalls, switches, Unified Knowledge of TCP/IP and networking protocols
  • Knowledge of MPLS, VPN and telecommunications
  • Knowledge of communications manager, wireless controllers, IPv4, IPv6, QoS, BGP, OSPF, DHCP and DNS.
  • Knowledge of applicable federal and state laws regarding education, teachers, and students, as well as data privacy practices and laws.
  • Knowledge of best practices for gathering, analyzing, and meeting business requirements.
  • Skill in voice, wireless, enterprise network technologies, routing and switching, and high availability networks
  • Skill in enterprise-grade network design and operation.
  • Skill in the use of technology and other digital platforms.
  • Skill in coordinating, planning, organizing, facilitating, and completing projects.
  • Skill in troubleshooting difficult issues that may require extensive research, as well as considering all aspects of an issue including hardware, software, network, security issues, and potential programming issues.

TRAVEL REQUIREMENTS

  • Travels to school district buildings and professional meetings as required.

PHYSICAL & MENTAL DEMANDS, WORK HAZARDS

MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Education: (See approved combinations of Education & Experience below) Accredited High School diploma, GED, or Texas Certificate of High School Equivalency required; Bachelor's degree from accredited college or university in a related field preferred.
  • Experience: 3-7 years' experience supporting large networked environments required.
