Job summary

Sophos is seeking an On-Site Network Engineer to join the Network Security Group in Pittsburgh, PA. You will build, support, and deploy hardware and software for development and QA across global lab environments.

The role requires hands-on data center experience, Linux familiarity, and strong networking skills. Remote work is not permitted for this position; onsite availability is essential and documentation is critical for DevOps processes.

Qualifications

• Associate degree or equivalent in IT or networking with related experience.
• Hands-on experience installing and configuring servers, OSes, and security appliances in a data center.
• Strong knowledge of network protocols and services (TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP); routing, switching, VLANs, WiFi, monitoring tools.
• Experience with firewall administration and VPN technologies.
• Comfortable using Linux command line and debugging network issues.

Responsibilities

• Provide hands-on in-office/lab support for NSG-ELS; install and configure firewall appliances, servers, and hardware.
• Install and configure Linux distributions in a reproducible manner.
• Maintain lab uptime to meet internal SLAs and support engineering teams in development and testing.
• Perform root-cause analysis of infrastructure issues and implement fixes.
• Maintain and document lab inventory; manage networking equipment and site infrastructure.

We are looking for an On‑Site Network Engineer to join our Network Security Group in Pittsburgh, PA. Sophos NSG develops industry leading Firewall, Secure Wi‑Fi, and Secure Web Gateway products. This is not a remote work position. The engineer will assist in building, supporting and deploying the hardware and software for development and quality assurance teams across global Sophos labs/data‑centers. This individual will apply his/her skills in systems administration and network administration to support the usage needs of the engineering teams and the broader organizations. Along with technical skills, the position requires someone who can maintain careful documentation and keep the extensive lab inventory current in a DevOps fashion based on Infrastructure as Code principles.

What You Will Do

• Hands‑on, in office/lab, NSG‑ELS team support of the following
  • Install, network and configure firewall appliances, servers and other hardware in the labs
  • Install necessary software (typically Linux distributions) in a reproducible manner.
  • Ensure maximum lab uptime meeting internal organization SLAs.
  • Support the engineering teams in performing product development and testing and day‑to‑day operations and maintenance.
• Root Cause Analysis of recurring lab infrastructure challenges
  • Diagnose and fix hardware or software problems as necessary in supported systems
• Maintain IT components as needed. Configure and maintain networking and site infrastructure (switches, routers, security components, VPNs etc.) as required
• Implement improvements to existing Labs Infrastructure
• Perform backup/restore activities for network device configurations, maintain accurate inventory and documentation, and support lifecycle management (patching, hardware refresh, and decommissioning).
• Responsible for capturing work activity in JIRA and plan effort accordingly using scrum principles

What You Will Bring

• Associate degree in Information Technology, Networking, Computer Science, or related field, along with at least 2 years’ related experience in network system administration and support experience.
• Hands‑on experience installing and configuring a wide variety of servers, operating systems, and security appliances in a datacenter environment.
• Good working knowledge of network protocols and services (e.g., Transmission Control Protocol (TCP)/Internet Protocol (IP), Domain Name Service (DNS), Dynamic Host Configuration Protocol (DHCP)), routing and switching concepts, VLANs, Wifi, and network monitoring tools.
• Experience with firewall administration and VPN technologies.
• Comfortable in navigating a Linux command line and OS through command line.
• Able to debug Linux system and networking issues.
• Experience with virtualized environments such as VMware vSphere, vCenter, Proxmox (KVM).
• Basic knowledge of MySQL database administration and troubleshooting.
• Basic knowledge of Shell scripting and Python scripting for configuration, automation, and troubleshooting.
• Excellent communication skills, written and verbal.
• Excellent organization and time management abilities.
• Onsite availability is a must.

Desired Skills

• Hands‑on experience with DHCP and DNS server configuration, administration, and troubleshooting.
• Working knowledge of Windows Server and Active Directory, including user and group management.
• Experience working in Software/Hardware QA or a similar testing environment

In the United States, the base salary for this role ranges from $60,000 to $100,000. In addition to base salary, we offer additional compensation including bonus eligibility and a comprehensive benefits package. A candidate’s specific pay within this range will depend on a variety of factors, including job‑related skills, training, location, experience, relevant education, certifications, and other business and organizational needs.
