Job summary

Cal.net is seeking a Network Engineer to design, implement, and maintain our network infrastructure across multiple sites in California. You will work closely with the NOC, field operations, and technical support to ensure high performance, reliability, and rapid incident resolution.

This full-time role includes an on-call rotation to support network incidents and escalations, with emphasis on architecture, automation, and proactive improvements for a growing ISP network.

Qualifications

• Strong knowledge of TCP/IP and routing protocols (BGP, OSPF).
• Experience with ISP/telecom networks including backbone, aggregation, access networks.
• Ability to analyze network performance and implement proactive improvements.
• Experience with troubleshooting tools and methodologies.

Responsibilities

• Design, deploy, and maintain network infrastructure including IP routing, switching, and fixed wireless systems.
• Lead network architecture initiatives for expansion, upgrades, and optimization of ISP and backbone networks.
• Troubleshoot complex network issues and provide escalation support to NOC, tech support, and field ops.
• Analyze network performance and implement improvements to ensure uptime and scalability.
• Develop and maintain network documentation, diagrams, and SOPs.
• Implement monitoring, alerting, and automation to improve visibility and efficiency.
• Participate in vendor evaluations and deployment of new solutions.
• Drive continuous improvement initiatives to reduce downtime and improve customer experience.

TheNetworkEngineerplaysacriticalroleindesigning,implementing,andmaintainingCal.net’snetworkinfrastructuretoensurehighperformance,scalability,andreliability.ThisrolepartnerscloselywiththeNOC,fieldoperations,andtechnicalsupportteamstoproactivelyimprovenetworkperformanceandquicklyresolvecomplexissues.TheNetworkEngineerisresponsibleforadvancingthenetworkarchitecture,drivingautomationandprocessimprovements,andsupportingtheorganization’smissionofdeliveringexceptionalinternetservice—especiallyinhard-to-serveareas.

Thisisafull-timepositionthatwillincludeparticipationinanon-callrotationtosupportnetworkincidentsandescalations.

Focus:

SkillSet:

• 3–7+yearsofexperienceinnetworkengineeringoradvancednetworkoperations.
• StrongknowledgeofIPnetworking,includingTCP/IP,routingprotocols(BGP,OSPF),VLANs,andswitching.
• ExperiencewithISPortelecomnetworkenvironments,includingbackbone,aggregation,andaccessnetworks.
• Proficiencywithnetworktroubleshootingtoolsandmethodologies(packetcapture,latencyanalysis,etc.).
• Familiaritywithnetworkmonitoringandmanagementplatforms.
• Stronganalytical,problem-solving,anddocumentationskills.
• Abilitytomanagemultipleprojectsandprioritiesinafast-pacedenvironment.
• Excellentcommunicationskills,withtheabilitytoworkeffectivelyacrosstechnicalandnon-technicalteams.

PreferredExperience,Education&Certifications:

• ISP/TelecomNetworkEngineeringexperience
• Experiencewithwirelesstechnologies(e.g.,Cambium,fixedwirelesssystems)
• Knowledgeofautomation/scripting(Python,Ansible,orsimilar)
• NokiaNetworkRoutingSpecialistCertification(orequivalent)
• CiscoCCNP/JNCIPorhighercertification
• Bachelor’sdegreeinComputerScience,Networking,orrelatedfield(orequivalentexperience)
