City of Lakewood is seeking a Systems Administrator to manage core information systems, including Microsoft servers, VMware/Hyper‑V virtualization, SAN storage, and network components.
Responsibilities include security posture, backups, disaster recovery, asset tracking, and interdepartmental collaboration. A solid background in Active Directory and servermanagement is required, with leadership duties possible as needed.
Under the direction of the CIO / IT Manager, this position performs system and network administration for the City's core information systems. Primary responsibility includes the configuration, maintenance and monitoring of Microsoft servers, VMWare/Hyper‑V Virtualization, and SAN Storage, networking, and key business systems. This position may perform team lead duties, as needed.
This is an AFSCME represented position.
Essential duties may include but are not limited to the following.
Advise management on best practices and policies related to systems security, operations, and maintenance of core systems and business applications; recommend and support the implementation of technical standards and policies; research hardware and software purchases, upgrades, and system improvement or system conversions; and assist in providing budget information for IT infrastructure and services
Maintain regular, reliable, and punctual attendance.
Support management in developing and maintaining an effective Business Continuity and Disaster Recovery Plan; implement backup and disaster recovery policies, procedures, and practices to ensure reliable protection of core systems and data.
Install and configure server hardware and software at the production server levels; record, track, and maintain IT assets in accordance with City standards.
Actively champion a culture of and commitment to workplace safety through everyday actions and leadership.
Assist in securing and maintaining software license agreements; review existing licenses for renewal appropriateness and alternative options.
Administrate, troubleshoot, configure, and maintain the City’s Microsoft Active Directory, Servers, VMWare/Hyper‑V, SAN storage, network infrastructure, backup systems and related hardware and software; perform and maintain daily backups of the network and server infrastructure and maintain documentation in accordance with City standards.
Assist in implementation and measures to maintain enterprise‑wide security and reliability of the City’s systems and applications; establish high level of systems monitoring and security practices; proactively implement best security policies, detection, and response systems; track, monitor, and diagnose server security issues; participate in risk assessments and vulnerability testing, penetration tests, and security audits.
May assist in and/or lead the day‑to‑day operations of the Network services and Helpdesk operations; serve as backup to the IT Network Administrator; and when required, perform assigned shift work or call out support.
Troubleshoot systems infrastructure including Active Directory, user accounts, core servers, storage systems, internet information services (IIS) and support structured query language (SQL) server maintenance and its related applications software, tape backup, and other related services; and supportIT staff as needed in resolving Helpdesk tickets.
Perform related duties as assigned.
Any relevant combination of education and experience equivalent to two (2) years of college with an emphasis in Computer Science, Information Systems, or other relevant field AND six (6) years of work experience in systems administration with at least one (1) year of Information Systems Security experience. This is a relevant combination of eight (8) years.
Valid Washington State driver's license with a driving record that meets an acceptable standard for safety at the point of hire and throughout employment in this position.
Must be at least 18 years of age.
Windows Server Hybrid Administrator certification and CompTIA Security+ are desirable.
Work is primarily performed in an office environment.
Constant use of sight, hearing, and speech abilities necessary to perform essential functions and communicate with others. Frequent fine finger manipulation and use of hands and arms in reaching/handling/fingering/grasping while operating office equipment and computers, preparing written documentation, handling paperwork, etc. Frequent sitting may be extended at times, while doing desk activities. Frequent bending/twisting at waist/knees/neck while working at desk, worktable, or moving from sitting to standing position; occasional bending, kneeling, and crouching to work on peripherals and microcomputers. Frequent standing in combination with walking (short distances) throughout work shift in office areas. Occasional pushing/pulling force up to 10 pounds opening doors, drawers, and moving materials; occasionally carrying objects weighing up to 50 pounds. Requires mental acuity to ensure thorough mental analysis of situations in a fast‑paced environment.
