Job summary

Detroit Public Media, d/b/a Detroit PBS and WRCJ 90.9 FM, is seeking a Part Time Network Administrator to support IT infrastructure and user services in our metro-Detroit locations.

The role covers desktop and laptop provisioning, network wiring, wireless access, email services, and coordination with IT leadership. Strong Windows experience, basic scripting, and WAN routing familiarity are a plus for this part-time position.

Qualifications

  • Two years of college-level courses in computer science, information technology or a related field.
  • Experience working in a Windows environment.
  • PowerShell scripting a plus.
  • WAN routing experience a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Installs and maintains internal network infrastructure including routers, switches, and firewalls.
  • Maintains software upgrades for network equipment and firmware compliance.
  • Installs, assembles, and configures PCs, monitors, network equipment and peripherals; cables as needed.
  • Troubleshoots computer systems, network, email and peripheral issues; performs repairs.
  • Assists in planning, design, and acquisition of new hardware/software; stays current with tech trends.
  • Coordinates with IT Director/VP and staff on IT support operations.

Part Time Network Administrator – Information Technology

The Part Time Network Administrator is responsible for the IT equipment and user services including personal computers (desktops, laptops), computer configuration and operations, network wiring to desktops, internal wireless systems, user network access, and email services. The Part Time Network Administrator works closely with the IT Director and the VP of Engineering & Technical Operations as well as other management staff or service providers in carrying out IT support operations of the Station.

  • Installs and maintains internal network infrastructure including routers, switches, and firewalls.
  • Maintains all software upgrades for network equipment ensuring all firmware are compliant to latest vulnerability standards.
  • Installs, assembles, and configures computers, monitors, network infrastructure and peripherals such as printers, scanners, and related hardware; pulls cables and rewires or directs the rewiring of cables as required for new installations and office reconfiguration.
  • Troubleshoots problems with computer systems, including troubleshooting hardware and software, e-mail, network, and peripheral equipment problems; makes repairs and corrections if required.
  • Makes hardware and software acquisition recommendations including helping users assess computing needs and providing justification for new equipment and services.
  • Assists in instructing station staff in the use of standard business and administrative software, such as word processing and spreadsheets; provides instruction or documentation where required.
  • Assists with the planning, design, research, and acquisition of new or upgraded hardware and software systems; maintains current knowledge of hardware, software and network technology and recommends modifications to administration as necessary.
  • Assists engineering with Broadcast Network needs as required.
  • Performs other duties of a similar nature or level.
Skills
  • Ability to analyze problems, research alternative solutions, and implement prompt corrective actions.
  • Proficient knowledge of computer hardware, software and peripherals such as servers, monitors, cables, network systems, printers, plotters, wireless routers, wireless networks and smart phone integration.
  • Proficient knowledge of procedures for installing, configuring, upgrading, troubleshooting, and repairing applicable software, hardware and peripherals; and techniques for explaining technical concepts and procedures to non-technical users.
  • Knowledge of current technology related to station applications, networks and telecommunications and the equipment and software required to maximize system support.
Qualifications

Two years of college-level courses in computer science, information technology or a related field, and three years of general computer installation, maintenance, and repair experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job as listed above.

Physical Demands

Individual must be able to type and sit behind a desk for extended periods of time. Bending and lifting 50lbs.

Individual is exposed to a typical office setting with computer equipment. This role will require local travel to respond to IT needs and troubleshooting at our various metro-Detroit locations.
