Job description

Neonatologist – Growing Area Less than an Hour from downtown Nashville

Vanderbilt University Medical Center / Monroe Carrell Children's Hospital at Vanderbilt

We’re seeking an additional Board-Certified/Board-Eligible Neonatologist to join the Department of Pediatrics and Mildred Stahlman Division of Neonatology at Vanderbilt University Medical Center working at the Level II NICU at Tennova Healthcare Clarksville, located just 47 miles from downtown Nashville. The ideal candidate will support Vanderbilt’s commitment to clinical excellence, quality improvement and education. Academic rank, track and compensation will be dependent upon qualifications. Vanderbilt University Medical Center offers a generous benefits package to the faculty.

Ranked #1 in Tennessee and sharing first place in the Southeast region by U.S. News & World Report in 2024-25, Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt is consistently ranked among the nation’s best in Neonatology (#33). In fact, the hospital is ranked in 10 out of 11 pediatric specialty programs, and its NICU was one of the first hospital programs in the world to care specifically for preterm infants. Monroe Carell has made the Best Children’s Hospital list for 18 years, every year since the ranking’s inception in 2007.

The hospital’s main Level IV NICU is a regional perinatal center for Tennessee, and the Division participates actively in the Tennessee Initiative for Quality Perinatal Care. The neonatologists work closely with their obstetric colleagues and the Tennessee Department of Health to promote access to care and outreach education to reduce preterm birth, maternal mortality, and infant mortality.

In addition to the 119-bed NICU at the Mildred Stahlman Division of Neonatology at Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital in Nashville, Tennova Healthcare Clarksville is one of three hospitals where Vanderbilt provides full-time neonatology services. The 12-bed Level II NICU is staffed 24 hours a day by in-house neonatal nurse practitioners supervised by three neonatologists who are readily available 24 hrs. per day. In addition, a busy labor and delivery service (with more than 2,000 deliveries a year) and a well-baby nursery (adjacent to the NICU) staffed by VUMC hospitalists are located on site. Specialists at VUMC are available for consultation, and the neonatal transport team can provide transfer of babies to the Level IV NICU at Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt in Nashville when needed.

About the Area

Ranked in 2024 on the prestigious list of Money magazine’s 50 Best Places to Live in the U.S., you’ll find that Clarksville offers a charming Southern location on the banks of the Cumberland River with easy access to big-city amenities and events. Clarksville has preserved its small-town feel while it has grown to be Tennessee’s fifth-largest city and is one of the state’s fastest-growing areas; in fact, Money also ranks it as one of the Best “New Boomtowns” in the nation.

Clarksville’s cost of living is among the state’s lowest, and you’ll find a diverse and extremely affordable mix of housing here, including city, suburban and rural environments, along with high-quality schools. Home to Austin Peay State University, a Division 1 school, Clarksville is also home to Fort Campbell, a U.S. Army base, that’s about 10 miles from downtown. Downtown Clarksville is historic and offers a year-round calendar of community events, including the annual Riverfest, along with a farmers’ market, shopping, restaurants, breweries, distilleries, coffee shops, 18 “challenge” trails, two large lakes nearby, an active live music scene, sports, and a wealth of public art.

Located less than an hour’s drive away is Nashville, the country music capital of the United States and Tennessee’s state capital. The Grand Ole Opry, the Johnny Cash Museum, and Country Music Hall of Fame, plus professional sports, shopping, nightlife, top-notch restaurants, and culture make Nashville one of our nation’s most exciting cities — and it’s all in your backyard.

In addition, Tennessee residents enjoy the benefit of no state income tax.
