The selected individual will function as a Neonatal Nurse Practitioner (NNP) delivering critical care medical management in the Newborn Critical Care Center based at the North Carolina Children’s Hospital, the delivery rooms of the North Carolina Women’s Hospital, components of UNC Hospitals, and the brand-new North Carolina Surgical Hospital. The practitioner works in a multi-disciplinary, academic environment and interacts with students, residents, fellows, faculty and staff from medical, surgical, nursing, respiratory therapy and other medical allied health professionals.

UNC Children’s Hospital has been listed as America’s Best Children’s Hospital by U.S. News & World Report for the 11th year in a row. The Newborn Critical Care Center (NCCC) is a 74-bed level IV ICU. It is located on the 4th and 6th floors of North Carolina Children’s Hospital, and served by 16 board-certified attending neonatologists, 32 nurse practitioners, and more than 150 neonatal specialists. The NCCC underwent an expansion in September 2024, opening 22 single patient rooms, including 2 twin rooms, on the 6th floor of the Children’s Hospital.

Summary

An Advanced Practice Provider (APP) functions as part of the interdisciplinary healthcare team in accordance with privileges approved by the credentialing committee to provide high-quality, cost-effective care to patients within the APP’s scope of practice in collaboration with a supervising physician. The APP reflects the mission, vision, and values of the organization and complies with all relevant policies, procedures, guidelines and regulatory/ accreditation standards.

The practitioner has responsibility for complete daily medical management of a caseload of critically ill newborn infants, including delivery room resuscitation, initial stabilization, mechanical ventilation, parenteral drug administration, emergency management, acute and continuous medical care of the infant and communication with the infant’s family. Care is provided under the supervision of attending neonatologists of the Division of Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine according to approved protocols and procedures.

Responsibilities

• Clinical- Obtain relevant health and medical history, perform physical assessment, review and interpret diagnostic tests/results, develop differential diagnoses, and implement treatment plans consistent with guidelines and privileging. Conduct preventive health screening and maintain clear, comprehensive records. Maintain knowledge of general disease processes and specialty literature. Derive correct diagnoses and revise plans as patient needs change. Prioritize work and assist staff to ensure prompt and efficient patient flow. Maintain high productivity and participate in projects to improve productivity. Perform medical procedures as appropriate within guidelines.
• Education- Educate patients and families regarding medical conditions, treatment, and follow-up. Collaborate with clinicians, staff, and students to promote continuity of care. Develop educational materials and provide education to physicians, housestaff, nursing, ancillaries and/or students. Engage in self-directed learning and attend education programs as needed.
• Leadership- Provide instruction to physicians, housestaff, nursing, ancillaries and/or students; participate in community/network outreach programs; develop and lead outreach initiatives. Apply knowledge of healthcare systems to improve delivery of care and lead quality and system improvements.
• Professionalism- Interact with patients and families respectfully and timely; collaborate with team members; respond to needs and resolve problems; share responsibility for workload.
• Quality/Research- Engage in continuous quality improvement; collaborate on problem-solving and decision-making; lead interdisciplinary teams; develop or revise protocols to reflect evidence-based changes; influence policy to improve patient care; develop new clinical programs as needed.

Education Requirements:

• Completion of an accredited graduate-level Advanced Practice Provider (APRN or PA) program.

Licensure/Certification Requirements:

• Licensed as an Advanced Practice Provider in North Carolina (e.g., NP, PA, Clinical Pharmacist Practitioner, CNM, CRNA). Board certification if required by the Department.

Professional Experience Requirements:

• No prior experience required.
