Job Summary

The Nurse Educator collaborates with managers and specialists to develop, deliver, and evaluate teaching and training for nursing staff. Responsibilities include creating orientation, continuing education and in‑service programs using current nursing research, focusing on patient care, quality improvement and accreditation requirements. The role also consults on patient care and staff performance, participates in setting patient care standards, and maintains knowledge in the clinical area assigned.

Essential Functions

• Gather data from sources such as needs assessments and quality reports to determine learning needs of staff.
• Serve as a resource to nurse managers to meet bedside staff education and training needs.
• Plan, prepare and maintain educational materials.
• Develop, implement and evaluate cost‑effective educational programs for staff and patients.
• Teach in formal and informal settings using appropriate adult learning principles.
• Coordinate core education addressing patient population specific nursing care.
• Deliver competence‑based programs for nursing staff focusing on skill improvement and knowledge retention.
• Incorporate clinical research into education and training programs.
• Evaluate effectiveness of educational programming.
• Ensure programs align with organizational missions, values and goals.
• Identify opportunities to enhance nurse professional development.
• Maintain clinical competency in the assigned specialty.

Qualifications

Any combination of education and experience that provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities is qualifying. Education: Bachelor’s degree in Nursing or related discipline from an accredited college or university is required.

Minimum Qualifications

Employees hired before Jan. 15, 2017 are not required to obtain an MSN. Those hired after Jan. 15, 2017 must be enrolled in an accredited Master of Science in Nursing Education or Master of Education program and obtain the master’s within five years from job acceptance, or hold a Master’s in Nursing and a graduate nursing education certificate within three years from job acceptance.

Experience

Three (3) years of experience as a registered nurse in a clinical setting.

License/Certification

• Registered Nurse licensed by California Board of Registered Nursing
• Basic Life Support certification by American Heart Association (AHA) or RQI Healthcare Provider Basic Life Support

Knowledge

• Knowledge of the American Nurses Association Scope and Standards of Practice for Nursing Professional Development in teaching/learning activities
• Proficiency with MS Office (Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, Outlook)
• Effective oral and written communication skills
• Ability to adjust communication to diverse audiences

Pay Range

Hourly: $82.98 to $103.73 (minimum to mid). Pay based on level, education, experience, knowledge, skills, location, and internal equity.
