Job summary

Focused Interruption seeks a Community Safety Worker to build trusted relationships in Madison neighborhoods, connect residents to social and crisis services, and support conflict prevention. You will operate alongside violence-interruption staff for higher-risk cases and follow strict safety and confidentiality rules.

The role emphasizes approachable, patient, and community-minded work with strong ties to local resources and ongoing documentation of interactions.

Qualifications

  • Experience with the public, communities, or vulnerable individuals in support/outreach roles.
  • Strong ties to the communities served and ability to build trust across diverse groups.
  • Excellent interpersonal and listening abilities.
  • Comfort with basic de-escalation and everyday conflict resolution.
  • Good judgment on when to elevate or refer to others.
  • Knowledge of local social services and crisis resources.

Responsibilities

  • Work in pairs on community assignments, following safety procedures.
  • Maintain a visible, consistent, approachable presence in neighborhoods.
  • Build everyday relationships with community members, families, businesses, and groups.
  • Serve as a trusted first point of contact for questions and requests for help.
  • Attend and support community meetings, events and gatherings.
  • Respond to minor disputes with calm, non-judgmental de-escalation.
  • Follow up to repair relationships and prevent recurring issues.
  • Refer higher-risk situations to violence-interruption staff or emergency services.
  • Identify community members who may benefit from support and provide referrals.
  • Help navigate social services, crisis lines, healthcare, housing, food, and more.
  • Follow up to ensure access to needed help and maintain knowledge of local services.
  • Keep accurate, confidential records and share neighborhood observations with the team.
  • Follow safety, confidentiality, and lone-working policies.
