Job summary

MISTRAS Group is seeking a qualified NDT UT II Shear Wave Technician for full-time on-site work in Atlanta, GA. The role involves performing advanced ultrasonic inspections to detect and document discontinuities in welds, base materials, and structural components, ensuring compliance with customer specs and quality standards.

The ideal candidate will hold a Level II UT certification, have experience with shear wave UT, and be able to read engineering drawings and procedures.

Qualifications

  • Current UT Level II certification per ASNT SNT-TC-1A, NAS-410, or CP-189.
  • Experience performing manual shear wave UT inspections.
  • Ability to read welding/fab drawings and inspection requirements.

Responsibilities

  • Perform UT inspections using shear wave techniques on welds, plates, pipes, and components.
  • Interpret inspection results per codes and customer specs.
  • Set up and calibrate UT equipment prior to and during inspections.
  • Document discontinuities and prepare inspection reports and data sheets.

Description

MISTRAS Group is seeking a qualified NDT UT II Shear Wave Technician, full-time, in Atlanta, GA. The ideal candidate will perform advanced non-destructive examinations using ultrasonic shear wave techniques to detect, evaluate, and document discontinuities in welds, base materials, and structural components. This position requires a strong understanding of ultrasonic inspection principles, applicable industry codes, and the ability to interpret inspection results while ensuring compliance with customer specifications and quality standards.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Perform Ultrasonic Testing (UT) inspections utilizing shear wave techniques on welds, plate, pipe, pressure vessels, and structural components.
  • Interpret and evaluate inspection results in accordance with applicable codes, standards, and customer specifications.
  • Set up, calibrate, standardize, and operate ultrasonic testing equipment before and during inspections.
  • Identify, size, characterize, and document discontinuities using appropriate shear wave methods.
  • Complete accurate inspection reports, data sheets, and quality documentation.
  • Verify equipment calibration and maintain calibration records.
  • Read and interpret engineering drawings, weld symbols, procedures, and technical specifications.
  • Ensure inspections are performed in accordance with ASME, AWS, API, ASTM, and customer requirements.
  • Maintain compliance with company Quality Management System (QMS), safety policies, and industry regulations.
  • Coordinate with customers, supervisors, engineers, and quality personnel regarding inspection findings.
  • Assist with developing inspection techniques and improving inspection processes.
  • Mentor and provide guidance to Level I technicians as needed.
  • Maintain certification records and participate in continuing education and annual proficiency requirements.
  • Travel to customer facilities and job sites as required.

Requirements:

  • Current Level II Ultrasonic Testing (UT) certification in accordance with ASNT SNT-TC-1A, NAS-410, or CP-189.
  • Demonstrated experience performing manual shear wave ultrasonic inspections.
  • Thorough understanding of ultrasonic wave propagation, angle beam inspection techniques, DAC, AWS D1.1 acceptance criteria, and flaw characterization.
  • Ability to read and interpret fabrication drawings, weld procedures, and inspection requirements.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office applications and electronic reporting systems.
  • Valid driver’s license and ability to travel.

Preferred Requirements:

  • Graduated from a Non-Destructive Testing School
  • Additional NDT certifications (PT, VT, PAUT, RT) are a plus
  • Experience in refinery, manufacturing, fabrication, aerospace, or industrial environments preferred
