Duties

• You will provide technical direction that ensures timely, technically accurate execution of complex design projects and develop documents or drawings for planning projects.
• You will prepare or direct the preparation of engineering drawings, calculations, specifications or other engineering products.
• You will assume responsibility and authority for technical adequacy, accuracy and timely execution of complex design projects.
• You will troubleshoot, analyze and resolve technical, administrative and scheduling problems.
• You will evaluate operations, equipment and activities and develop solutions to project testing and certification objectives.
• You will perform engineering studies to determine systems requirements, modifications, repairs or specifications.
• You will provide naval architecture, structural engineering principles.

• This position may require travel to places within and outside the contiguous United States which could include remote or isolated sites. You may be required to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.

• You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
• This position may require travel from normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites. You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
• Work requires walking, crouching, kneeling, intensive crawling though severely confined spaces, and hand-over-hand climbing in tanks aboard ships.
• Work is performed at extreme heights and will require hand-over-hand climbing on ladders in order to reach the work location. Work is performed in offices, at repair facilities and on ships/submarines, both pier side and at sea.
• You will be required to complete training, obtain, and maintain a government credit card for travel and travel-related purchases.
  
  

Qualifications

GS-12: In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-11 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: Engineer in design, overhaul and repair of ships/submarines; resolve engineering problems and/or analyze engineering requirements to execute projects related to submarines and ships repair/ maintenance; Engineer applying engineering theories and practices to evaluate, advise on and approve design changes associated with naval architecture, mechanical or structural engineering.

GS-11: In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-09 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. Specialized experience must demonstrate the following: as a professional engineer applying engineering theories and practices to identify, evaluate, and resolve design problems associated with naval architecture, mechanical or structural engineering.

• OR - In lieu of the specialized experience listed above, you may qualify with the following education or combination of both education and experience (GS-11 ONLY):
• Successful completion of a Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree OR
• Successful completion of three full years of progressively higher-level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. or equivalent degree OR
• A combination of experience and education as described above that equates to one year of experience. My percentage of the required education plus my percentage of the required experience equal one hundred percent.

Work is sometimes performed in climate-controlled offices and laboratories. There is frequent exposure to adverse conditions such as found in production facilities and on ships. The incumbent will be assigned to work in areas where certain, potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present. These 'agents will include, but are not limited to fumes, dust, noise, heat, ionizing and non ionizing radiation, and chemicals. To ensure employee safety and health, the shipyard maintains personal protection programs consistent with applicable laws and regulations. These programs may include engineering controls, training, work procedures, use of personnel protective equipment, and medical surveillance. As part of medical surveillance programs, the incumbent may be required to take medical examinations to assess his or her medical qualification for work involving these agents. Incumbent will be under pressure to produce solutions under extreme time-constraints.
