THOR Solutions is actively seeking a highly motivated mid-level Naval Architect with experience with structures to support the United States Coast Guard (USCG)’s Ship Design Team in Washington, DC. An ideal candidate will have prior experience with designing structural and strength components for shipboard use, experience with marine structural codes, and development and use of structural analysis calculations in a USCG, Navy, or other maritime environment.

Typical Responsibilities

  • Provide technical support and documentation for ship feasibility, concept, preliminary and contract design, integration, stability analysis, hydrodynamic and seakeeping properties.
  • Evaluate systems and equipment, develop and analyze requirements, perform studies and documentation relating to hull form, stability, weights, structures, and design.
  • Develop system documentation and ship specifications for surface assets and boats, perform structural analysis and design using ISO and class society standards.
  • Conduct analyses on stability studies, assist with inclining experiments and weight and stability tests, and oversee design development.

Location: Primarily onsite (at least 3 days/week) at USCG Headquarters in Washington, DC. Alternate telework schedules or work locations may be considered for especially qualified candidates.

Travel:Up to 10% travel is anticipated for ship checks.

Typical Physical Activity: Primarily desk/computer work in an office environment. May involve: repetitive motion. Periodic visits to waterfront/shipboard environments. May involve: traversing shipboard environments (e.g., confined spaces, ladders, hatches) or vision.

Typical Pay Range: The anticipated pay range for this position in the identified location(s) is $80,000 – 105,000. Actual compensation offered will be based upon individual factors including education, qualifications, and experience.

US Citizenship Required:Due to the requirements of the federal contract that this position supports, existing U.S. citizenship is required. Citizenship will be confirmed via I-9/E-Verify at the start of employment. Applicants who do not currently possess U.S Citizenship will not be considered.

Security Clearance Eligibility Required:This position requires eligibility for a DoD Secret security clearance. A qualified candidate must either already possess an active or interim Secret security clearance (preferred); OR be eligible for a Secret security clearance upon hire. Applicants who cannot affirm eligibility for a security clearance will not be considered.

Typical Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Naval Architecture or another relevant technical, engineering, or a marine discipline from an ABET-accredited institution.
  • At least three (3) years of progressive experience with naval architecture, specifically including designing structural and strength components for shipboard use, experience with marine structural codes, and development and use of structural analysis calculations.
    • Experience related to U.S. Federal or commercial ship or boat building acquisition programs preferred.
    • Experience with DoD ACAT I or DHS Level I shipbuilding programs preferred.
  • Experience with computer applications relating to naval architecture and ship design.
  • Experience with corrosion principles of metals for surface assets and boats.
  • Familiarity with USN, USCG, IACS and/or commercial ship design rules and regulations.
  • Proficient with common productivity software.
  • Strong communications skills.
