Introduction

This recruitment is limited to current Maryland Police Officers, who possess a certification card as a current Police Officer by the Maryland Police Training and Standards Commission (MPTSC) or are eligible for certification via an MPTSC Comparative Compliance Training Course. Eligibility for comparative compliance is not guaranteed and will be determined by the MPTSC but may be available to individuals who were previously certified Maryland police officers who have been separated from law enforcement between 3 and 5 years and non-Maryland officers who completed an acceptable entrance level academy in another state or through the federal government. This is a statewide position specific recruitment for the Department of Natural Resources (DNR), Natural Resources Police. The resulting eligible list will be used to fill positions in the Natural Resources Police throughout the State of Maryland. Applicants selected for this position must be willing to be stationed anywhere in the State of Maryland. This recruitment will be used to fill current vacancies for the position and may be used to fill future vacancies in the same classification/function. The resulting eligible list will be maintained for one year.

LOCATION OF POSITION

Statewide; locations would be assigned by NRP leadership based on current vacancies and the immediate needs of the department.

POSITION DUTIES

A Natural Resources Police Officer is the entry level of law enforcement work in the Department of Natural Resources (DNR) to enforce State and federal laws and departmental rules and regulations as they apply to conservation, boating, DNR managed lands, criminal, civil and traffic violations. Employees in this classification do not supervise.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

Education: High School diploma or G.E.D. certificate acceptable to the Maryland State Board of Education as described in the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission regulation.

Experience: None.

LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS AND CERTIFICATIONS

  1. Employees should be in possession of a Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission certification. Employees will be required to attend an abbreviated academy to be trained on Natural Resource Police specific objectives.
  2. Employees in this classification will be assigned duties which require the operation of a motor vehicle and will be required to possess a motor operator’s license valid in the State of Maryland.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

  1. Selection standards for police officer certification are established by the Maryland Police and Correctional Training Commission in accordance with the Annotated Code of Maryland, Public Safety Article, Section 3-207.
  2. Employees are subject to call-in 24-hours a day and will be issued a cellular phone.
  3. Employees in this classification will be required to bear firearms and to demonstrate practical knowledge and proficiency in the safe use and care of firearms on a periodic basis.
  4. Employees in this classification are subject to substance abuse testing in accordance with Code of Maryland Regulations, 17.04.09, Testing for Illegal Use of Drugs.
  5. Employees in this classification are subject to assignment in any area of the State.
  6. Employees in this classification will serve a two-year probation period.

SELECTION PROCESS

If an applicant meets the minimum requirements to be considered for the position, they will be scheduled to complete a physical test designed to assess the applicant’s fitness level and physical preparedness for the academy. Selected applicants will be subject to a comprehensive background investigation which will include truth verification device testing (polygraph), drug screening, and oral interview. Applicants who successfully complete the background investigation will be required to successfully complete a medical examination and a psychological examination. If all aspects of the process are successfully completed, applicants will be placed on an eligibility list for one year.
