Job description

GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES
To operate, adjust, service, and repair heavy equipment used to support various Department of Environmental Management construction and maintenance projects; operate and maintain chainsaws, landscaping implements, welding units, and general construction equipment; assist with the development and maintenance of public access improvements; conduct habitat management activities which include the use of specialized mechanical equipment for clearing and cutting dense vegetation; and to do related work as required.
SUPERVISION RECEIVED
Assignments of repair work or construction tasks are issued by a superior; work methods are subject to approval but not constantly supervised; work is subject to review upon completion for satisfactory results and conformity with technical requirements.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED

Occasionally, may direct the work of assigned subordinates.
To operate, adjust, service, and repair heavy equipment used to support various Department of Environmental Management construction and maintenance projects; operate and maintain chainsaws, landscaping implements, welding units, and general construction equipment; assist with the development and maintenance of public access improvements; conduct habitat management activities which include the use of specialized mechanical equipment for clearing and cutting dense vegetation.

To operate, adjust, service, and maintain a variety of heavy construction and maintenance equipment including but not limited to graders, bulldozers, farm tractors and related implements such as harrows, spreaders, plows and discs, mowers, excavators, skid steers, front end loaders, truck and trailer units, fish stocking tank trucks, and snowplow units.

To be responsible for assigned motor equipment, making necessary repairs, and maintaining proper servicing and service logs.

To repair or replace entire engines, drive trains, front ends, tracks and rollers, tires, brakes, etc. on heavy equipment such as front-end loaders, skid steers, excavators, trucks, four wheel drive off road vehicles.

To assist with the development and maintenance of public access improvements such as informational signs, kiosks, check stations, roads, parking areas, beaches, lawns, picnic areas, campsites, restrooms, bike paths, trails, fences, gates, water control structures, fishways, dams, equipment storage facilities and offices.

To operate heavy equipment for brush mowing, land clearing, and snow removal operations.

To grade roads, parking lots, boat ramps, paths, with minimal supervision.

To set up and breakdown facilities for seasonal use.

To perform restroom cleaning and maintenance.

To keep beaches, lawns, picnic areas, campsites, bike paths and grounds clear of litter and other debris.

To edge, prune shrubs and bushes, weed,, plant flowers, shrubs, and grass; perform leaf cleanup.

To provide support to biological programs and hatchery operations by performing tasks such as assisting with pheasant stocking, fish stocking/transport, check station operation, and biological data collection as needed.

To assist with operations and maintenance of Department of Environmental Management facilities, equipment, infrastructure, and grounds, as well as public access areas such as boat ramps, fishing accesses, fishways, dams, roads, parking areas, and management areas.

To operate equipment such as light trucks, compressors, welders, chainsaws, and other light equipment. As required, to supervise subordinates assigned to perform skilled maintenance.

To keep records and make written or oral reports.

To do related work as required.
KNOWLEDGES, SKILLS AND CAPACITIES
A working knowledge of the methods, practices and tools used in operating, repairing, and maintaining heavy construction and maintenance equipment used to support Department of Environmental Management operations, including excavators, skid steers, backhoes, truck and trailer, farm tractors and implements, brush mowing equipment, and fish stocking equipment; a familiarity with general construction and maintenance methods; a working knowledge of the methods and means used to repair or replace the surface of parking lots and roads; the ability to grade roads, parking lots and paths, with minimal supervision; the ability to perform tasks with mechanical aptitude; the ability to understand and follow instructions; the ability to prepare and keep simple records and to make reports; demonstrated ability to repair or replace entire engines, drive trains, tracks and rollers, brakes, tires, and front ends of heavy equipment; and related capacities and abilities.


EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE

Education: Completion of 2 years of high school, including or supplemented by courses in mechanics and vehicle repair; and, Experience:Employment for at least two years in a position requiring the operation, repair and maintenance of heavy diesel and gasoline motor equipment and trucks dealing with various phases of construction and maintenance functions.
Or, any combination of education and experience that shall be substantially equivalent to the above education and experience.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS

1. At the time of appointment must be physically qualified to perform assigned duties as evidenced by a physician’s certificate.
2. Must possess and maintain a CDL Class A Driver's License and a valid Rhode Island Hoisting Engineers License for pay loader, backhoe, and excavating equipment, and must maintain such licensure as a condition of employment.

3. Candidates hired must obtain a Tanker endorsement for their CDL Class A Driver’s License within 6 months of hire date.
