Clinical Excellence, a national OptumCare team, seeks an experienced National Senior Medical Director to lead our growing Value Innovations efforts. This executive physician will provide expertise in population health, specifically Clinical Documentation Review with knowledge of DRG coding and clinical operations. The role involves strategizing, designing, and implementing current and future value-based initiatives.

Our mission at Clinical Excellence is the effective implementation, monitoring, and execution of clinical programs that improve patient and provider experiences, achieve superior outcomes, and sustain costs. We support internal physician groups in clinical improvement and capability-building initiatives.

This role requires daily interaction with executives, frontline providers, and operational staff. The successful candidate will drive value in existing workstreams and expand our portfolio of solutions. Leadership responsibilities include representing programs in senior meetings, leading reviews and improvements, and managing financial aspects.

Primary Responsibilities
  • Lead Optum Enterprise Innovative DRG Clinical Review program
  • Assume leadership of Optum DRG Optimization Programs
  • Manage a team of medical directors, nurse coders, and operations staff to deliver DRG performance
  • Identify opportunities to expand and optimize programs in collaboration with hospital utilization management and claims teams
  • Collaborate with IT to implement AI enhancements
  • Participate in other Value Innovation programs
  • Lead change management initiatives
  • Collaborate with regional care delivery organizations and Payment Integrity
  • Partner with IT on program development and implementation
  • Establish trust-based relationships within teams and external partners
  • Foster teamwork, continuous improvement, and accountability
  • Approach problems proactively with energy and passion
  • Work effectively in a diverse, collaborative environment

Required Qualifications
  • M.D. or D.O. degree
  • Board certification in a recognized specialty
  • 5+ years management experience
  • 3+ years clinical experience post-residency
  • Experience with DRG clinical documentation and coding within hospital or payor systems
  • Data analysis, synthesis, and presentation skills
Preferred Qualifications
  • MBA, MMM, MPH, or similar master’s degree
  • Adherence to UnitedHealth Group’s Telecommuter Policy for remote employees

The salary range is $278,000 to $417,500 annually, based on experience and achievement. Benefits include comprehensive packages, incentive programs, stock options, and 401k contributions. We support your growth and success.
