Job description

National Sales & Business Development Manager, Retail

New York Tri-State Area (NY, NJ, CT) | Full-time

About the company

Our client is a family-owned, multi-generational specialty food importer and distributor in the Northeast. Its multi-brand portfolio is sold through national and regional retail chains and national specialty distributors. Many of its brands have grown well beyond their original core into mainstream conventional grocery, specialty, natural and multicultural food categories.

About the role

The company is reorganizing its sales structure around a single sales force that represents its full brand portfolio to retailers. This role leads business development in retail: opening new accounts, new channels and new distribution, including well beyond the company’s traditional core categories. It also takes over an existing book of conventional retail and specialty distributor accounts, which is the base for that growth.

This is a retail sales role, not a brand management role, and it does not cover foodservice or club stores. It is an individual contributor position that reports to the Vice President of Sales and is supported by internal promotions and deductions teams. For the right performer, it can grow over time into a larger leadership role in the sales organization.

What you will do
  • Lead business development: identify, pursue and secure new accounts and new distribution across conventional grocery, specialty, natural and multicultural retail, including emerging categories
  • Position the company’s brands beyond their traditional core categories, particularly in Italian, Mediterranean, Middle Eastern and other ethnic and specialty food sets
  • Open nontraditional retail outlets, such as drug, convenience and campus stores
  • Take over an existing book of accounts through a structured transition with the current sales team, and grow it with new item authorizations and expanded distribution
  • Introduce new products, strengthen shelf presence and develop merchandising opportunities across multiple supermarket departments
  • Manage the company’s business with UNFI and KeHE, and work with brokers and other distributors to improve execution
  • Build senior-level relationships with buyers and category managers at chains such as Kroger, Albertsons, Walmart, Publix, Wakefern/ShopRite, Wegmans and Stop & Shop/Ahold Delhaize
  • Plan account activity around retailers’ promotional calendars and the seasonal business, working with the internal promotions team
  • Bring a commercial understanding of trade spend and deductions to customer agreements (deduction processing stays with the internal deductions team)
  • Lead customer presentations, category reviews and annual business planning
  • Coordinate with the sales, marketing, operations and distribution teams, and share market intelligence across the organization
What you bring
  • 10+ years of specialty food sales experience
  • A proven record of new business development: opening new retail accounts and winning new distribution
  • Hands-on experience selling through UNFI and KeHE, including new item presentations, promotions and distributor programs
  • Established relationships with buyers at major conventional supermarket chains and a record of growing distribution with them
  • Working knowledge of promotional calendars, trade promotions and the seasonal business
  • Experience managing brokers and working across a multi-brand portfolio
  • A record of measurable account and distribution growth
  • Strong communication skills and disciplined follow-up
  • A self-motivated, entrepreneurial, hands-on style that suits a family-owned company
  • Residence in New York, New Jersey or Connecticut
Preferred
  • Understanding of authentic Italian brands and the Italian specialty food category
  • Experience with multicultural and ethnic food categories, such as Italian, Mediterranean or Middle Eastern
Compensation and benefits
  • Car allowance of $450 per month, plus reimbursement of business tolls and fuel
  • Health, life and disability insurance, 401(k), FSA, vacation and holidays
