Job Title: Natatorium Assistant Coach – Iron Horse Aquatics Club Team (Part-Time, Summer)

Reports to: Swim and Dive Coordinator / Head Club Coach

Dept/School: Athletics Department

Work Year: Usually 20-25 hours/week (occasionally may work a 35-hour week)

Salary: $20/hour

Primary Purpose

To coach or assist in running one or more groups for our club swim team. Assist the Head Coach and the Head Age Group Coach in day-to-day operations of the team as needed. Work with the Head Coach and the Head Age Group Coach in developing a seasonal plan, writing daily workouts, and daily on-deck coaching responsibilities as determined by the Head Coach.

Qualifications

Education/Certification:

Eighteen years or older

Current USA Swimming (USAS) Coach Certified

Current Lifeguard/CPR/AED/First Aid

Special Knowledge/Skills

Knowledge of coaching techniques and procedures

Ability to instruct and supervise athletes

Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills

Mentally and physically fit

Knowledge of USA Swimming rules

Genuine enthusiasm for working with athletes of all ages (5-18)

Capable of responding calmly in emergency situations

Experience

Previous competitive club / interscholastic / college swimming experience (preferred)

Previous coaching and/or advanced swim lesson instruction experience

Instruction

MAJOR RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES:

Use a variety of instructional techniques and media to meet the needs and improve the abilities of student athletes in swimming.

Assist in all swimming activities, contests and practices sessions to promote the individual growth in athletic skills, teamwork, and good sportsmanship as directed by Head Coach.

Work with Head Coach/Head Age Group Coach to plan and implement instructional goals and objectives to ensure the overall educational development of student athletes.

Program Management

Assist in establishing performance criteria for competition and evaluate athlete’s athletic abilities initially and on a regular basis.

Take all necessary precautions to protect student athletes, equipment, materials, and facilities.

Work with Head Coach to schedule and cover competitions and plan season activities including practices, special events, and meets.

Ability to write a seasonal plan for multiple training groups.

Ability to write age and ability-specific daily workouts.

Attend meets in which club team athletes are entered.

Other duties as assigned by Head Coach, Natatorium Staff, or Athletic Department.

Student Management

Accompany and supervise divers during diving competitions both at home and at away meets.

Follow directives from Head Dive Coach in applying and enforcing athlete discipline during contests, practices, and while on trips off school property in accordance with the Iron Horse Aquatics Handbook.

Encourage, by example and through instruction, sportsmanlike conduct in all phases of athletic participation.

Communication

Establish and maintain open, effective, and professional communication with parents, athletes, and staff in conjunction with the Head Coach.

Follow established chain of command when working through all situations.

Attend all required meetings.

Demonstrate loyalty and positively promote the program to all stakeholders.

Administration

Maintain current safety training and USA Swimming Certifications.

Assist in selection of equipment and instructional materials.

Compile, maintain, and file all reports, records and other documents required.

Assist in the process of cleaning, repairing, and storing all campus athletic equipment and maintain current inventory of all equipment and fixed assets within program.

Maintain accurate daily attendance rosters

Other Duties As Assigned

Maintain emotional control under stress. Frequent standing, stooping, bending, pulling and pushing. Frequent districtwide and statewide travel; frequent prolonged and irregular hours; outdoor exposure to sun and heat.
