POSITION SUMMARY
The Apprentice Aircraft Maintenance Technician supports the inspection, servicing, troubleshooting, maintenance, and repair of company aircraft operating under 14 CFR Part 121.
Working under the direction and supervision of qualified and authorized Aircraft Maintenance Technicians, Leads, Supervisors, and other designated maintenance personnel, the Apprentice assists with scheduled and unscheduled maintenance while developing the knowledge, skills, and experience necessary to become a fully qualified aircraft maintenance professional.
This position is designed as a hands-on training role within an airline maintenance environment. The Apprentice will perform assigned tasks within the limits of their training, qualifications, and company authorization while complying with applicable Federal Aviation Regulations (FARs), the Company’s Continuous Airworthiness Maintenance Program (CAMP), maintenance manuals, General Maintenance Manual (GMM), approved technical data, and established safety and quality procedures.
Safety, regulatory compliance, accurate maintenance documentation, attention to detail, and aircraft airworthiness are essential responsibilities of this position.
DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Assist qualified Aircraft Maintenance Technicians with scheduled and unscheduled maintenance on company aircraft.
- Perform aircraft maintenance tasks only within the individual’s demonstrated level of training, qualification, and authorization and under appropriate supervision.
- Assist with aircraft inspections, servicing, troubleshooting, component removal and installation, operational checks, repairs, and preventive maintenance.
- Assist with line maintenance and/or hangar maintenance activities, including but not limited to daily, service, and weekly checks, scheduled maintenance packages, aircraft discrepancy resolution, and in-house shop work orders.
- Assist in troubleshooting aircraft mechanical, electrical, avionics, hydraulic, pneumatic, fuel, flight control, landing gear, engine, and auxiliary power unit systems as assigned.
- Remove and install aircraft components, panels, fairings, interior components, wheels, brakes, batteries, filters, line-replaceable units, and other equipment as directed and authorized.
- Perform routine aircraft servicing activities, including lubrication and servicing of engine oil, hydraulic fluid, oxygen, nitrogen, tires, potable water, and other systems when properly trained and authorized.
- Assist with engine and APU inspections, servicing, troubleshooting, component replacement, and operational checks.
- Perform visual inspections for corrosion, structural damage, fluid leaks, loose or missing hardware, damaged wiring, worn components, foreign object damage, and other aircraft discrepancies.
- Accurately report all observed aircraft discrepancies to the supervising technician, lead, supervisor, or other appropriate maintenance personnel.
- Use applicable aircraft maintenance manuals (AMM), illustrated parts catalogs (IPC), wiring diagram manuals (WDM), structural repair manuals (SRM), fault isolation manuals (FIM), component maintenance manuals (CMM), engineering orders, service bulletins, work cards, and other approved technical data when performing assigned work.
- Follow the Company’s Maintenance Program, General Maintenance Manual, policies, procedures, and approved maintenance instructions.
- Ensure maintenance is performed using current and applicable technical data, procedures, tooling, and instructions.
- Complete maintenance paperwork and electronic maintenance records accurately, clearly, and in accordance with company procedures and regulatory requirements.
- Record work accomplished, parts or materials used, discrepancies identified, and other required maintenance information under the direction of appropriately authorized personnel.
- Understand and comply with company procedures concerning maintenance sign-offs, task accomplishment, inspection requirements, required inspection items (RII), and return-to-service authority.
- Immediately notify appropriate personnel when an assigned task requires inspection, specialized authorization, engineering assistance, or maintenance action beyond the apprentice’s level of qualification.
- Assist with troubleshooting and resolving aircraft discrepancies reported by flight crews, maintenance personnel, or aircraft monitoring systems.
- Support aircraft arrival, departure, and quick-turn maintenance activities as required.
- Assist with aircraft ground handling activities including towing, pushback support, repositioning, jacking, lifting, and operation of ground-support equipment when trained and authorized.
- Assist and/or perform and complete in-house shop work order assignment(s) such as cargo ULD repairs, component repairs, tool service, and other operational project assignments.
- Follow all company tool-control procedures and maintain accountability for assigned tools and equipment.
- Maintain clean, organized, and safe aircraft maintenance work areas, including hangars, ramps, shops, work stands, aircraft interiors, and company vehicles.
- Properly handle, identify, store, and dispose of aircraft fluids, chemicals, batteries, hazardous materials, and maintenance waste in accordance with company procedures.
- Work cooperatively with quality control, engineering, technical records, materials, flight operations, ground operations, and other departments as necessary to support safe and reliable airline operations.
- Support the company’s operational goals while recognizing that safety, regulatory compliance, maintenance quality, and aircraft airworthiness take precedence.
- Perform other maintenance-related duties as assigned that are consistent with the employee’s training, qualifications, and authorization.
POSITION REQUIREMENTS
Qualifications
- A high school diploma or GED is required.
- Must be currently enrolled and maintain full-time enrollment in an FAA-approved aviation maintenance technician (AMT) school; prefer completion of at least one year thus far with an accredited AMT program.
- Previous maintenance, automotive, diesel, heavy equipment, military aviation, or other mechanical experience preferred.
- Must have and maintain a valid driver’s license and a good driving record.
- Pass a pre-employment background check and maintain qualifications in accordance with DOT/FAA regulations.
- Ability to safely use common hand tools, power tools, measuring equipment, and maintenance equipment.
- Ability to work effectively in a safety-sensitive, highly regulated environment.
- Ability to work flexible hours, including nights, weekends, and holidays, as required.
- Excellent problem-solving skills and ability to maintain attention to detail while working under operational time constraints.
- Basic computer proficiency and ability to learn electronic maintenance tracking documentation systems.
- Must have basic tool set and standard technician/mechanic toolbox.
Language and Communication Skills
- Ability to follow oral and written instructions.
- Ability to read, understand, and follow technical manuals, maintenance instructions, drawings, diagrams, and work cards written in English.
- Ability to write routine reports and correspondence.
- Ability to communicate effectively with maintenance personnel, supervisors, flight crews, and other operational employees.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
- The work is classified as “heavy”.
- Ability to perform the tasks and responsibilities of the position in a safe and effective manner including lifting up to 70 lbs., climbing, reaching, standing, pushing, and pulling up to 100 lbs.
- Exposure to high noise levels, moving aircraft and equipment, dirt, dust, fumes, heat, cold, exposure to hazardous materials, exhaust fumes, working in confined spaces for extended periods, and working outside in harsh winter conditions for up to 2 hours at a time. Use of personal protective equipment including respirators.
