The
- Demonstrates basic knowledge of the purpose, intent, and function of music therapy for various client populations.
- Demonstrates basic knowledge of philosophical, psychological, physiological, and sociological bases for the use of music as therapy.
- Demonstrates basic knowledge of the use of current technologies in music therapy assessment, treatment and evaluation.
- Help patients to restore and maintain mental health, increase comprehension abilities, improve physical abilities and improve their overall wellbeing.
- Instruct patients individually or in groups in prescribed instrumental or vocal music and music projective techniques such as guided imagery, progressive relaxation, or awareness of conscious feelings.
- Communicates assessment findings and recommendations in written and verbal forms.
- Observes and records accurately the client's responses to assessment.
- Selects and implements effective culturally based methods for assessing the client's assets and problems through music.
- Identifies the client's therapeutic needs through an analysis and interpretation of music therapy and related assessment data.
- Selects or creates music therapy experiences and settings that meet the needs of the client.
- Formulates goals and objectives for individuals and group therapy based upon assessment findings.
- Provides preliminary estimates of frequency and duration of treatment.
- Offers sensory stimulation that allows the client to use visual, auditory, or tactile cues.
- Promotes relaxation and/or stress in music therapy sessions.
- Utilizes therapeutic verbal skills in music therapy sessions.
- Sequences and paces music experiences within a session according to the client's needs and situational factors.
- Conducts or facilitates group and individual music therapy with the use of improvisational skills.
- Creates a physical environment (e.g. arrangement of space, furniture, equipment, and instruments) that is conducive to effective therapy.
- Develops and maintains a repertoire of music for age, culture, and cognitive differences.

Bachelor's Degree Required
Master's Degree preferred
Certification Board for Music Therapists (CBMT)
MT-BC (Music Therapist, Board Certified)
Professional Experience:
- 2-4 years of related experience
- Basic instrument-playing ability, moderate vocal skills and considerable knowledge of music styles
- Ability to develop and use a variety of musical applications to coordinate a treatment plan
