Position Purpose

Under the supervision of the School Principal, develop students' understanding and appreciation of music, including listening to a wide range of musical genres, periods, and styles.

Identify, promote, and develop each student's talents in vocal and instrumental expression. Help students learn skills that contribute to their development as mature, responsible individuals.

Essential Functions

  • Develop and administer a music education curriculum aligned with district goals.
  • Create a safe and conducive classroom environment for instruction and learning.
  • Organize lessons to allow adequate time for preparation, rehearsal, and instruction.
  • Assess student progress and adapt teaching methods accordingly, including for students with special needs.
  • Utilize diverse music literature appropriate to the curriculum.
  • Coordinate rehearsals and direct students in performances outside the classroom.
  • Engage in ongoing professional development through seminars, workshops, or research.
  • Maintain accurate records of student achievement, attendance, and progress.
  • Encourage parental involvement and communicate effectively with students and parents.
  • Maintain student discipline and standards of behavior to ensure a productive learning environment.
  • Collaborate with colleagues and participate in faculty meetings and committees.
  • Manage music supplies and equipment, maintaining inventory and ensuring functionality.
  • Develop lesson plans using NIET Best Practice Instructional Rubric and participate in professional growth activities.

Equipment

Use standard musical equipment.

Travel Requirements

Travel to district buildings and meetings as required.

Pay Rates

PEA certified position.

Work Schedule

Standard teacher work schedule as per contract.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Knowledge of current teaching methods, pedagogy, and differentiated instruction.
  • Knowledge of English language arts content.
  • Ability to play and conduct musical instruments.
  • Ability to teach singing, harmonization, and chorus.
  • Proficiency with computer systems and software.

Physical and Mental Demands

Seldom to Very Frequent physical activities including standing, lifting, reaching, and operating equipment.

License/Certification

  • Current Indiana Teacher’s License in applicable subject area.

Education

BA degree in Fine Arts.

Experience
