Music Teacher - Choral and General (Probationary) - Middle School

Scarsdale Middle School is seeking a talented, experienced, and innovative candidate for a full-time probationary Choral/General music teaching position starting August 27, 2025. The school serves grades 6-8 with approximately 1100 students and offers a rich educational program. Candidates must hold NYS K-12 music certification, with experience in middle school choral/directing and general music essential. Knowledge in choral/vocal pedagogy, repertoire, and supporting students through changing voices is required.

Position Purpose

Under supervision of the Principal, to facilitate student success through implementing curriculum, assessing progress, creating a positive learning environment, and communicating with students, parents, and staff.

Essential Functions
  • Develops culturally responsive music curriculum aligned with district goals
  • Creates a safe and conducive classroom environment
  • Collaborates on curriculum development with colleagues
  • Utilizes current music and educational technology
  • Plans lessons with opportunities for rehearsal and reflection
  • Assesses student progress and adapts instruction accordingly
  • Provides individual and small group instruction
  • Directs musical performances and programs
  • Engages in ongoing professional development
  • Maintains accurate records and communicates with parents
  • Ensures student conduct aligns with school policies
  • Coordinates with staff and participates in meetings
  • Requisitions and maintains music supplies and equipment
Additional Duties
  • Performs tasks as assigned by the principal or administrators
Equipment
  • Uses standard office and school equipment
Travel Requirements
  • Travel to district buildings and meetings as needed
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Knowledge of current music teaching methods and pedagogy
  • Ability to instruct middle school chorus and general music, including repertoire and vocal health
  • Familiarity with music technology and troubleshooting
  • Ability to organize performances and school events
  • Strong communication and organizational skills
Physical and Mental Demands

Works in typical school environments.

Qualifications
  • NY State Certification in Music (K-12)
  • Bachelor’s degree required; Master’s preferred
  • Previous teaching experience in music is preferred
