Job Description

Position Summary:

Reporting to the Head of Academic Engagement, the Music Librarian oversees the operations of the Dickinson Music Library and provides multifaceted support for teaching, learning, and research. They serve as the primary library liaison to students and faculty in the Music Department and to other departments and multidisciplinary programs as assigned. They provide library instruction and research consultations, create and maintain research guides and other learning resources, communicate with faculty and students about library services, and are responsible for collection development in these subject areas.

The Music Librarian works closely with colleagues throughout the Vassar Libraries to ensure that Music Library operations are effective, efficient, and aligned with the practices of the libraries as a whole. They supervise two (2) staff members who provide day-to-day support in the Dickinson Music Library. They will collaborate with library and Music Department colleagues to shape the future of the Music Library and ensure that its services, collections, and programs support and anticipate evolving needs in music pedagogy, practice, and research.

The Music Librarian participates as a full member of the Academic Engagement team in providing reference service, proposing and contributing to departmental initiatives, promoting the libraries' services and programs, and supporting the varied and richly multidisciplinary needs of the Vassar community. They are expected to be active on campus through committees and other activities, and to maintain awareness of issues and emerging practices in music librarianship.

This position is eligible for faculty suffrage and other librarian benefits as outlined in the Faculty Handbook. Occasional travel is required to represent Vassar College Libraries and participate in professional organizations

Responsibilities:
  • Serve as liaison to the Music Department and other departments and programs as assigned, through research consultations, instruction in a variety of modes, collection development, and outreach and engagement efforts.
  • Oversee the operations of the Music Library, including hiring and managing staff, the supplies budget, monitoring the Music Library facility and equipment, and reporting statistics and usage data.
  • Collaborate with colleagues in other Library departments to provide support for core Music Library functions, including circulation, facilities maintenance, preservation, and others.
  • Contribute to the Academic Engagement department's programs and services, including providing point-of-need reference service and developing workshops, events, and other programing relevant to the Vassar community.
  • Participate in broader campus initiatives, including campus-wide committees, task forces, planning groups, pre-major advising, etc.
  • Participate in professional development activities including attending library and subject area conferences, training workshops, etc.


Required knowledge, skills, and abilities:
  • Master's degree in Library and Information Science with an advanced degree in music strongly desired, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • At least 3 years experience in an academic library.
  • Extensive knowledge of music-related resources and a demonstrable understanding of music cataloging practice.
  • Ability and desire to build relationships and collaborate across multiple constituencies.
  • Commitment to providing research support and instruction that respects individuals' backgrounds, cultures, and learning preferences.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and as a team member in a rapidly changing environment.
  • Competence and sensitivity in working at a college in which students are broadly diverse with regard to many facets of identity, including but not limited to gender, ethnicity, nationality, sexual orientation, and religion.


Preferred knowledge, skills, and abilities:
  • Supervisory experience
  • Music cataloging experience
  • Reading knowledge of one or more foreign languages


Compensation

The starting annual base salary range is $65,000-$83,000.

When extending an offer, Vassar College considers factors such as (but not limited to) scope and responsibilities of the position, candidate's work experience, education/training, key skills, internal peer equity, budget, and other market and organizational considerations. The starting salary range represents the College's good faith and reasonable estimate at the time of posting.
