Position Description: Music Director/Manager
Reports to: Minister

Status: 0.5 FT, 42 weeks per year, mid-August through May. This position offers the flexibility for the Music Director to work some of their 20 hours away from the UUCD building.

Salary range: $19,829 to $22,050

Expected start date: August 1, 2026

Position Summary

The person in this role creates, develops, plans, and coordinates most music programming for the worship services, life celebrations, and general public events that the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Duluth (UUCD) hosts. This position has a collaborative/shared ministry relationship with the minister in using music to support the spiritual development and mission of the congregation. This position works in an environment of teamwork in which other staff members, Music Committee members, and music volunteers can draw upon the expertise of the person in this role.

Essential Functions

Work with UUCD staff; develop a Music Committee; support and supervise an accompanist; encourage and lead the choir, volunteer musicians, and occasional band; and find and supervise guest musicians to provide a comprehensive music program that supports the spiritual development of the congregation.

Play the piano and provide music/musicians appropriate to the weekly topic/monthly theme for Sunday morning service three Sundays a month.

Source music for the Sundays that the Music Director is not working.

Provide choir repertoire, weekly rehearsals (mid-August through May), and a choir performance at least once a month in worship.

Attend and participate in weekly staff meetings.

Collaborate with the Minister and Worship Planning Team at monthly meetings to support the overall worship providing process as it intersects with worship music, including any relevant music plans.

Collaborate as needed with the tech team each week for setup of, for example, microphones and cameras.

Provide weekly Community Song (Hymn) information and lyrics as needed as well as musician locations for each worship music element on a weekly basis to tech volunteers.

Engage the Music Committee in promoting volunteer participation in music programming as well as providing Sunday morning support for guest musicians.

Ensure the upkeep and maintenance of musical instruments

Required Qualifications

Keyboard musician with choral and performance experience.

Demonstrated leadership skills in choir directing.

Demonstrated ability to collaborate and coordinate with staff, congregant volunteers and other musicians.

Demonstrated effective communication skills with colleagues and others.

Degree in Music Performance, Music Therapy, Music Education, or equivalent experience.

Physical Requirements

Ability to move freely in and out of group settings

Ability to set up environments for group activities including moving choral folders and associated equipment.
