Job summary

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent required.
• Must possess or obtain IEPA Public Water Supply Operator certification.
• Minimum Class C Public Water Supply Operator License required.

Responsibilities

• Operate and monitor municipal water facilities including meters, pumps, motors, chemical feed systems and storage facilities.
• Maintain proper chemical feed rates and disinfection levels to ensure regulatory compliance.
• Monitor operational parameters: chlorine residual, pH levels, water pressure, flow, and tank levels.
• Adjust processes to maintain water quality standards.
• Operate and maintain the municipal water distribution system (mains, valves, hydrants, services, meters).
• Perform hydrant flushing and valve exercising; assist with leak detection.
• Conduct sampling and testing per IEPA/state/federal regulations (bacteriological, disinfection byproducts, lead/copper, nitrate/nitrite, VOCs).
• Ensure proper sample handling, documentation, and submission to laboratories.
• Maintain logs, complete monthly/annual reporting, and support IEPA sanitary surveys.
• Engage in preventive maintenance of pumps, motors, generators, treatment equipment, tanks and instrumentation.
• Respond to water system emergencies and participate in after-hours on-call rotation.
