Job summary

City of Miami Beach is seeking an experienced maintenance worker to perform advanced manual labor under general supervision, supervising unskilled staff and maintaining records. The role covers diverse park and street maintenance, equipment operation, and basic repairs.

Candidates must hold a Florida driver’s license; some positions require a Florida Class B CDL. Shift work may include nights, weekends, and holidays. Promotional opportunities exist for long-tenured city employees.

Job description

Advanced manual labor duties of a skilled and semi-skilled nature. Work is performed under general supervision.

• Supervises unskilled employees
• Keeps some simple records and submits reports
• Performs manual labor work requiring knowledge of some specialized facets of a particular field of maintenance or construction work
• Operates maintenance or construction equipment or may drive a truck
• Drives and operates professional type mowers in the maintenance of parks, parkways and right of ways
• Performs routine maintenance and makes minor repairs and adjustments thereon
• Repairs, replaces and installs sewer and water lines and related facilities
• Inspects, repairs and paints fire hydrants
• Paints, repairs, installs traffic signs, barricades and other traffic control devices
• Makes water connection taps and operates tapping equipment
• Spray paints road markings, loads painting materials and supplies
• Constructs and raises brick manholes
• Drives and operates farm-type tractors with a variety of attachments such as spreaders, trailers, drags, tillers, cultivators, mowing units, and other attachments necessary for park maintenance and construction; and performs routine maintenance and makes minor repairs and adjustments thereon
• Transports workers, equipment, materials, and supplies
• Install plants, trees and shrubs
• Loads and unloads equipment, supplies, tools and materials
• Removes and replaces sod, sprinkler heads, groins, catch basins, etc.
• Cuts grass and trees, rakes leaves, trims and prunes trees and shrubbery
• Digs shallow trenches and ditches, assists in installing pipes, cleans catch basins, manholes and sewer lines
• Performs various ground landscape maintenance duties
• Safely operates specialized equipment including but not limited to: ice resurfacing machines, field groomers and similar and other comparable machinery as assigned.
• Picks up paper, debris, maintenance and construction materials on public property and streets
• Performs related work as required

• OPEN COMPETITIVE: Six (6) months’ experience performing semi-skilled manual labor, often under unfavorable conditions
• Florida Driver's license current & valid
• Some positions require a Florida Class "B" or higher and a current & valid Commercial Driver's License valid for air brakes
• PROMOTIONAL: Employed by the City for the past six (6) months with Regular status (part-time will be prorated)
• Six (6) months’ experience performing semi-skilled manual labor, often under unfavorable conditions
• Florida driver's license
• Some positions require a Florida Class "B" Commercial Driver's License valid for air brakes
• Shift work includes nights, weekends, and holidays Preferred;
