Job Opportunities

The City of Mount Airy is accepting applications for a Municipal Service Worker I – Streets. An employee in this class performs a variety of duties in street maintenance for the City of Mount Airy. Work involves manual labor and the operations of tools and equipment in performing assigned tasks. Employees are subject to working in both inside and outside environments, in extreme hot and cold weather, and exposure to various hazards such as loud noise, vibrations, moving mechanical parts, electrical current, chemicals, fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, poor ventilation, and oils. Work may be around sewage and therefore subjects those employees to the OSHA blood borne pathogen requirements. Salary for this position is $15.00/hour.

Employees may also be subject to on-call and call-back work. Work is performed under the supervision of a higher-level lead worker or crew leader and is evaluated through observation, conferences, and inspection for adherence to instructions and standard trade and safety practices.

Responsibilities
  • Performs a variety of unskilled manual tasks such as handing tools, lifting and placing pipes, shoveling out around pipes and appurtenances, repairing and maintaining streets, sidewalks, and storm drains.
  • Repairs and replaces asphalt, sidewalks, driveway aprons, curb and gutter, or other street appurtenances after utility cuts; assists with building manholes or other brick or block work.
  • Stocks trucks and checks equipment for proper operations; performs minor preventive maintenance to the equipment.
  • Sets up construction signing and cones under the direction of the crew leader; flags traffic.
  • May serve as a member of a crew during snow or leaf season.
Minimum Requirements

Graduation from high school and some experience with construction or maintenance work; or an equivalent combination of training and experience required. Prefer that applicants have a CDL license but must be willing to obtain CDL within 6 months of the date of hire.
