Job summary

The City of Champaign is seeking a part-time Law Clerk to apply theoretical legal principles to municipal matters. You will conduct research, draft memoranda, and assist with pleadings under the supervision of City Attorneys.

Starting around November 2, 2026, this role offers up to 15 hours per week during the school year with the possibility of up to 40 hours during school breaks, including court appearances and courtroom support as needed.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree and first two semesters of law school completed.
• Basic knowledge of federal and state law.
• Ability to seek, analyze, and organize facts and precedents.
• Superior oral and written communication skills.
• Experience in office or customer service.

Responsibilities

• Develop and apply legal research and writing skills on municipal law topics.
• Research topics including real estate, planning and economic development, labor and employment, public safety, contracts, and municipal finance.
• Prepare pleadings and internal legal memos with research summaries and recommendations.
• Appear in court in civil matters or as the City’s prosecutor under supervision.
• Transfer documents to/from courthouse and assist with administrative tasks including customer service.
