JOB SUMMARY
Performs administrative duties in support of the Municipal Court’s overall mission. Directs and monitors all operations of the Municipal Court to ensure efficient operations in the areas of collections, dockets, warrants, and records retention. Responsible for revenue collections, customer service, policy development and interpretation, and court administration.
Uses office skills to handle customer service and communications (internal and external); file organization and management; data entry, word processing, spreadsheets, databases, and graphics software; mathematical computations; report and letter preparation; and decision-making within the scope of responsibility.
Attendance is an essential function of this position. The City reserves the right to require an employee in this position to work overtime. Some services or duties may differ from those performed in the usual course and scope of the position.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
The duties described below are representative of the work a Municipal Court Clerk may be asked to perform and are not intended to be an all-inclusive list.
Customer Service/Clerical
- Generates reports from information regarding traffic citations, accident reports, and theft reports.
- Receives citation fines by mail and in person at the window and collects fines from court. Balances cash drawers, maintains the mail log, and issues Failure to Appear complaints and warrants.
- Processes bonds for the Judge’s signature to refund or forfeit bond monies per court disposition and prepares financial statements.
- Prepares paperwork on Class A and Class B misdemeanors and felonies for transfer to County and District Courts.
- Communicates with the Police Department, City Attorney, and Inspection Department to arrange bench and jury trials. Issues subpoenas to officers and witnesses, generates jury summonses, prepares docket sheets for daily trials, and handles and records appeals.
- Answers phones and communicates with the public and other City departments. Retrieves dispositions on closed cases, maintains dockets, and maintains a detailed filing system.
- Processes warrants, capias warrants, show cause letters, deferrals, community service, defensive driving, family violence, and juvenile cases.
- Performs all other duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skills, and abilities required at the time of hire or for continuation of employment.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
- Highschooldiplomaorequivalent(GED).
- Previous front-line customer service experience dealing directly with the public.
- Previous cash handling experience.
Preferred
- One to two years’ experience in a municipal, justice, county, or district court, or in a law office.
- Current TCCA Certified Municipal Court Clerk, Level I.
