Job summary

City of Galveston seeks a City Attorney to serve as the legal advisor for all city officials, officers and departments. You will draft ordinances, resolutions, and contracts, ensuring compliance with applicable laws and representing the City in litigation and in Municipal Court proceedings.

The role emphasizes municipal law, land use, labor relations, civil service, and legislative interpretation, with leadership of the City Attorney's Office and collaboration with City Council and staff.

Qualifications

• JD from an accredited law school and admission to the State Bar of Texas.
• Minimum ten years’ experience as a municipal lawyer or equivalent.

Responsibilities

• Direct City Attorney's Office and manage department budget.
• Represent the City in litigation, mediation, arbitration and hearings.
• Coordinate with outside counsel on City litigation matters.
• Advise City Council, City Manager, department heads and boards on legal issues.
• Research and prepare oral and written legal opinions for City officials.
