Job summary

PQ Joliet is seeking a Journeyman Mechanic or Journeyman Electrician to maintain on-site equipment and plant infrastructure in Joliet, IL. The role combines both disciplines and requires your training to perform mechanical or electrical maintenance, troubleshoot issues, and follow safety procedures.

You will document work in the CMMS, coordinate with supervisors, and participate in required training while working overtime as needed. This is a union position with starting pay of $46.97 per hour.

Qualifications

• High school diploma or equivalent.
• Minimum 5 years of experience as Journeyman Mechanic or Electrician.
• Pass electrical/instrumentation evaluation as prescribed by PQ Joliet Maintenance Department.
• Pass mechanical evaluation as prescribed by PQ Joliet Maintenance Department.
• Attend designated training to maintain or improve skills in mechanical or E&I maintenance.
• Strong work ethic and good decision-making; safety procedures awareness (LOTO, hot work, etc.).

Responsibilities

• Install, troubleshoot, maintain, clean, and overhaul rotating equipment (pumps, motors, gearboxes, conveyors, etc.).
• Install, troubleshoot, maintain stationary equipment (piping, valves, supports, insulation, tanks, etc.).
• Troubleshoot and maintain lube oil and shaft sealing systems.
• Perform pipe fitting, welding, carpentry, painting, rigging and instrumentation tasks.
• Install and maintain electrical, electro-mechanical and electronic systems (110-440V, control circuits).
• Calibrate and troubleshoot instruments (pressure, level, temperature, pH, controllers, etc.).
• Enter work in CMMS; report delays or required parts.
• Maintain clean work areas and tools; attend required training.
• Comply with environmental, health and safety regulations.
• Identify parts and source from storeroom.

This role is responsible for maintaining on-site equipment and facility infrastructure at PQ Corporation Joliet through their training and experience with mechanical, electrical, and instrumented systems. The person in this role will primarily be a Journeyman Mechanic or Journeyman Electrician, with a secondary skillset in the other discipline. This role will accept a certain amount of scheduled and unscheduled overtime work as needed.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities

• If Journeyman Mechanic: Install, troubleshoot, maintain, clean, and overhaul rotating equipment including pumps, motors, gearboxes, compressors, agitators, belt conveyors, screw conveyors, vibratory conveyors, bucket elevators, fans, blowers, rotary valves, couplings, belts/sheaves, chains/sprockets, hammer mills, etc.
• If Journeyman Mechanic: Install, troubleshoot, fabricate, maintain, clean, and repair stationary equipment including piping, valves, piping supports, insulation, sheet metal, angle iron, heat exchangers, cooling towers, tanks, pressure vessels, ladders, grating, trenches, handrails, doors, etc.
• If Journeyman Mechanic: Troubleshoot and maintain lube oil systems, shaft sealing systems, and overall equipment/system performance.
• If Journeyman Mechanic: Perform a variety of skilled maintenance trade functions including pipe fitting, welding, carpentry, painting, rigging support and instrumentation.
• If Journeyman Electrician: Install, troubleshoot, maintain, clean, and overhaul electrical, electro‑mechanical and electronic digital systems including 110-220-440 volt single and three‑phase electrical distribution, disconnect starters and push button stations, ignition wiring systems, control circuits on boilers, combustion equipment, batch weighing and automatic processing equipment, sequential digital logic and distributed digital and analog process control systems.
• If Journeyman Electrician: Calibrate and troubleshoot a wide range of instruments consisting of pneumatic, electronic, and digital modes including pressure, level, temperature and pH controllers and recorders, gas analyzers, weigh cells, air operated valves, electronic probes, programmable controllers, digital and analog controllers, mass flow devices, speed control, pulse flow devices, nuclear measurement devices, etc.
• Repair, install, and maintain all plant equipment, buildings, utilities, and services.
• Identify specific parts and supplies needed for specific jobs and obtain from the storeroom.
• Enter information into the Computerized Maintenance Management System to document work completed, equipment condition, and time reporting.
• Notify the supervisor or planner of any circumstances that will require additional parts, assistance, further investigation, or which may delay the scheduled completion of the work.
• Clean all work areas and maintain tools and maintenance equipment.
• Attend any designated training courses as required by the Company to maintain or improve his or her skills for required mechanical and/or E&I maintenance.
• Maintain a working familiarity with all plant processes and equipment and their relation to critical equipment.
• Comply with all federal, state, and local environmental, health, and safety regulations and requirements.
• Comply with company policies and procedures.
• Perform other duties as assigned or required.

• Minimum 5 years of experience working as either a Journeyman Mechanic or Electrician in a manufacturing environment.
• If Journeyman Mechanic: Pass an electrical and instrumentation evaluation as prescribed by PQ Joliet Maintenance Department.
• If Journeyman Electrician: Pass a mechanical evaluation as prescribed by PQ Joliet Maintenance Department.
• Attend any designated training course(s) as required by the Company to maintain or improve his or her skills for required mechanical or E&I maintenance. This will be dependent upon evaluation results.
• Must Demonstrate a Strong Work Ethic (Attendance, Attitude, Etc.)
• Good Decision‑making Skills (makes decisions, acts upon them, willing to defend decisions over peer pressure)
• Firm understanding of life critical safety procedures such as LOTO, Hot Work, Line Break, Working at Heights, Confined Space Entry, Excavations, etc.
